THE GANGS ALL HERE: Let The Good Times Roll!
THE PIERCE FAMILY: Walt begat Mark, Todd & Kimberly, and Mark begat.......
YES, THE GANGS ALL HERE, ALL 28 OF US! The good times did roll and roll and roll! The occasion was a party to celebrate my 80th birthday and they all came. They flew in from Boston, drove up from Virginia and shuffled in from Cleveland to Cincinnatti. Every child, grand child and great grand child, and spouses, excepting Bethany's husband, Aaron, a doctor, with duties as Chief of Residence at Virginia University Hospital, they were all there. What a gang!
So, what do you do at an 80th birthday party? Well, everyone hugs and kisses, laughs and shares stories. We haven't been together since Jillian and Tim's wedding. Family love just eminated from each and everyone and filled the house with joy. So much has happened in each person's life that all loved to share. I wonder what "deeds of daring" these two had to share, Granddaughter Rosebud and Great Granddaughter Sicily.
BTW, Rosebud on the left is 9 while Sicily, the tallest, is 5. Like her mother, Delaney Rose is such a little cutie, and a grandpa's girl if there ever was one!
TOSSING THE BABY OF THE FAMILY INTO THE AIR, STILL FUN!
WHAT A ROWDY BUNCH I'VE BRED! From doing a jig to a body toss, life is anything but dull when these troops assemble. Don't know where they get it. Must be from their Mother's side of the family. Un Huh! Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it! You know, these are all my son Mark's kids. Mary Kay, their mother was a Hawk, a rowdy family if there ever was one, from Marilyn Hawk on down, Un Huh!
Son Todd and Amy came with their hands full! No not with gifts, I'll get to the gift later. Fresh from another spring bike ride, which involved mountain camping in the snow, they came prepared to give the pot a good stiring! They had an ingenious creation called a Phlart, I think, which thrilled even the youngest great grand child to the neon apparatus that glows in the dark and decorated everyone, including me.
They also brought three vases of paper flowers which brough tears and laughter to one and all. Each flower unwrapped to a brief story or saying of mine over their life times. "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story".Or, "The suns shining, the birds are singing and the bees are all a making honey" Thats two well used but more modest ones. As the boys imintated my voice with some of the sayings, tears and laughter abounded.
KIMBERLY'S TABLE, ALWAYS A TREAT!
The stories on the flowers came from each of the family members and the vases graced every table. One after another, like Riley here, they'd come to me to share their story. Don't study this picture too closely, you may be blinded by my tie. It is a from Danny Thomas founded St. Jude's Children Research Hospital. It is the loudest tie I own and goes well with my bright, green blazer. I may be "old and grey" but I'm "not in the way", as the song says. HA
OH YES! YOU DINE--HIGH ON THE HOG AS THEY'S SAY DOWN HOME!Kimberly and Jack who so graciously hosted the party in their home, had the meal catered. A man and two lovely ladies served drinks, whatever you could name, and tasty tib bits and removed the used plates and glasses. Kimberly had seating arranged by age groups and, in her large home, no one was crowded. A peek at the menu tells it all.
Salad: Leafy mesculun with Granny Smith Apples, Glazed Walnuts and Champagne Dressing.
Entree: Stuffed Chicken Breast Sofia and Lump Crab Cake, glazed whole Carrots & Red Skin Spuds
Dessert: Pastry Tray for Each Table
GIFTS, GIFTS, GIFTS? Naw, you can't have a birthday party without gifts. And, there was something from everyone. Yes, there were gifts of purchasing power for my kindle, there was an amazing iPod Shuffle, which Todd will need a weekend to show me how to use it--while it will let me listen to books, Todd put about 350 of my favorite Blue Grass and Old Time Country tunes on it.
A BREAK IN GIFT OPEINING FOR ANOTHER STORY!
Julie & Walt, "Go Buckeyes"
And, so very thoughtful, a new OSU hat and jersey ALONG WITH two tickets to Ohio States first game. I used to attend OSU games frequently but it has been awhile and I had told Kimberly I wanted to take Julie to a game.
The last game I attended was OSU vs WV. Mark was agast that I cheered for WV, we are such a died in the wool OSU fans. As Robert E. Lee said, to cheer agains (West) Virginia would be like cheering against my Mother.
My one true treasure in life is my three children and my family in general. I am truly blessed. Mark and Kimberly emailed me over a hundred pictures, more than I can share in a blog, but pictures that will warm my heart over the years. WHAT "FATHERLY" ADVICE DO I HAVE FOR THE KIDS? For my 70th birthday you rented an entire B&B for a weekend for the family; for my 80th birthday you moved up the road to a lovely mansion for a weekend; at this progression you will really have to work hard for my 90th birthday. GET BUSY!
Mark, Kimberly, Walt & Todd, What a crew!
THANK YOU SO MUCH, ONE AND ALL. IT COULD NOT HAVE BEEN ANY NICER THAN IT WAS. A SPECIAL THANKS TO KIMBERLY AND JACK WHO WERE SUCH GRACIOUS HOSTS.
"May the hand of a friend always be near you and may your family always cheer you"
An Old Irish Blessing. May it be so in your life as it is in mine.
