BLOG READERS, YOU WARM THE COCKLES OF MY HEART

This statue of Molly Malone was unveiled on Grafton Street in Dublin, Ireland during the 1988 Millennium Celebrations.

June 13th is designated as Molly Malone Day.

In Dublin's fair city, where the girls ares so pretty, I first laid my eyes on Molly Malone
She wheeled her wheelbarrow,
through streets broad and narrow
Crying cockles and mussels, alive alive-o

Alive, alive-o, Alive, alive-o
Crying cockles and mussels, alive alive-o

My wife and I visited Ireland in 1989, Shannon to Dublin, and we enjoyed this work of art.

I later returned to Ireland to backpack the west coast, from Cong, County Mayo down to Old Dingle Town, County Kerry.

I LOVE IRELAND, THE LAND OF MY PEOPLE!

THE HARBOR AT OLD DINGLE TOWN, COUNTY KERRY, IRELAND
And, the green, green grass of home!
The Irish Gaelic word "cochall" means "hood".  "Cochall an chroi" means hood of my heart, referring to a warm, woolen garment with a hood, warming one's heart.  As the saying became more widespread among non-Irish speakers, they misinterpreted "cochall" as "cockle" then "cockles", and eventually, "warm the cockles of my heart".

THANK EACH OF YOU FOR READING MY BLOG
Month-by-month, it continues to set new records for the number of blogs read
YOU WARM THE COCKLES OF MY HEART!

I'VE GOT A COUSIN CHERYL: She's Bad! Un Huh, Bad!

THERE ARE NO GOOD GIRLS GONE BAD ONLY GOOD GIRLS FOUND OUT

I have a cousin Cheryl.  She is a bad girl.  How can you tell?
Just look into her eyes.  They sparkle with michieviousness!

Cheryl is full of faults.  Chief among them is that she lives so far from where I live.  We almost never see one another.  THAT'S BAD!  Then, there is the meanness!  She is mean!  Yes, mean!  She knows I love chili.  She emails me that she has made 8 quarts of chili two weeks in a row for various charities.  I HAVEN'T HAD MY FILL OF CHILI FOREVER!  Next, she tells me that her husband, Jack, one of the good guys, has been into several singing events where they sing country and gospel, my favorite kind of music.  SHE TELLS ME THAT JUST TO BE MEAN!  Un Huh!

COUSINS BY BLOOD, FRIENDS BY CHOICE

My great grand father, Indivan Pierce, is Cheryl's great, great grandfather.  My grandfather was Indivan's son, William Henry, and Cheryl's great grandmother was Indivans daughter, Deborah.
Cheryl and I discovered one another when I mentioned Indovan on my blog site.  I also found three other cousins, which I hope to meet, but Cheryl and her husband, Jack, have become fond friends.

COUSINS ARE DIFFERENT FLOWERS FROM THE SAME GARDEN

There is a saying in our family when the food is slow a'com'n that it is the "DEBBY FACTOR".  That refers to Cheryl's great grandmother whose food was delicious but it was not known if it was from her skill at the stove or that she was so slow getting the food ready to eat that everyone was starved.  CHERYL HAD NEVER HEARD THAT STORY.  It is often used in our family, leading one to believe that no one ever mentioned the opinion to Deborah.  She was probably a bad girl also?

IN THE COOKIES OF LIFE, CHERYL IS A CHOCOLATE CHIP

My wife, Julie, and I first met Cheryl and Jack at their home near Charllottesville, Virginia when we visited th Prospect Hill Plantation Inn Bed and Breakfast for Thanksgiving a few years ago.

Even bad girls have their good moments.  Yes they do!  We hosted Cheryl and Jack to dinner the night before Thanksgiving.  The inn, renown for it's marvelous food, served lamb chops  Now, as lamb chops go, they were probably alright.  BUT WHO LIKES LAMB CHOPS?

As good guests should, they ate the food like it was wonderful.  IT WAS NOT!  Served with grace and style but it just wasn't what either family normally eats.

NOW THE BAD GIRLS COMES OUT!  The next time, after thanksgiving, she and Jack took us to dinner for some great steaks.  Yep! One-ups-man-ship!

IF YOU HAVE CRAZY COUSINS, YOU HAVE CRAZY TIMES

Not to be outdone, we invited them to be our guests for a week at Myrtle Beach, along with my son, Mark, and his wife, Mary Kay.  WE JUST HAD THE BEST OF TIMES.  Yep!  Birds of a feather do flock together.  No Bad food here.  Julie and I took turns day-by-day cooking our best dinners.  One night I even did a fish fry, Cheryl loves fish.  Last year, Jack had just changed employers and couldn't come back to the beach.  Cheryl came alone.  She was only there for a couple days when she had a death in the family and had to leave.  We missed our bad girl.

A COUSIN IS SOMEONE WHO WALKS IN WHEN OTHERS WALK OUT

It is seven months until our next family get together at Myrtle Beach.  We hope that Jack and Cheryl can both come again.  What we really hope is that they can come to our lakeside retreat for a Labor Day visit with the extended family.  If not then, that they can come to visit us at Thanksgiving time.  HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL!  I know they would like to come as much as we would like to have them.  Cousins are special!

OBAMA'S CROTCH SALUTE
Please Remember this in the November 2012 elections
This picture was taken on September 16, 2007
at Senator Tom Harkin's steak festival in Iowa
as the national anthem was being played.

During a reindition of the national anthem,
when the flag is displayed,
all present, except those in uniform,
should stand at attention, facing the flag
with the right hand over the heart.

In 1931, Herbert Hoover, pictured on the left, was president when I was born.

  I remember FDR.

Harry Truman was my Commander-in-Chief when I was in the Navy, followed by Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush 41, Clinton, and Bush 43.

OBAMA IS THE FIRST PRESIDENT TO
APOLOGIZE OVERSEAS
AND FIND FAULT WITH OUR COUNTRY

In an interview with Al Arabiya (The Arab One)
"All too often the United States starts by dictating...
and we don't always know the factors involved."

At a press conference at the London G20 Meeting
"If you look at the source of the crisis,
the United States certainly has some accounting to do."

In Strasborg, France
"In America there is failure to appreciate
Europe's leading role in the world."

In the Summit of the America's
"Too often the United States has not pursued and sustained
engagement with our neighbors."

I AM AGHAST AT OBAMA'S LAST EGREGIOUS ACT
HIS ADMINSTRATION IS HOLDING UP TAX REFUNDS
Multiplied by all taxpayers, this is no small thing!

Added to the daily rape at the gas pumps

while claiming credit for oil brought in by the previous administration
I WILL CERTAINLY REMEMBER THIS IN 2012

THE ART IS NOT MAKING MONEY, IT'S KEEPING IT

HE WHO DOES NOT ECONOMIZE WILL HAVE TO AGONIZE - Confucius

Benjamin Franklin was also "Poor Richard" but Benjamin Franklin was not poor!

"A penny saved is a penny earned"

"Beware of little expenses,
Small leaks sinks great ships!"

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN WAS FRUGAL!

Most people confuse frugality with being tight with money and self denial.  It is neither of those things.  Although I am careful with money, I deny myself little that I truly want.  The truth of the matter is, being frugal is more about s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g your dollar as far as it will go!  I am truly blessed with a good wife who is a genius at stretching the dollar like the lady in this picture.

When I recently complained about the increase in the cost of cole slaw mix, she reassured me that she would get the veggies we needed at the right price.  Tonight she did!

Out-of-season vegetables can be expensive, green peppers as much as a dollar each.  Julie bought two packs of two peppers for $0.49 a pack, a quarter of the normal price.  ONE DAY ONLY SALE AT ALDI'S.  Now Aldi's is a discount grocery.  Want a shopping cart?  Rent one from the cart corral for a quarter, which you get back when you return the cart to the corral, a self-serve system with no carts left in the parking lot.  Food is not shelved, it is left in the carton.  There are no people to bag  your groceries, in fact, there are no bags.  Bring your own.  Need to buy a bag, sure, ten cents.  No thank you!  Julie has her own bag, insulated even.  Mushrooms, $2.99 at Acme and over $3.00 at Giant Eagle.  Yep!  Julie paid $0.49, ONE DAY ONLY SALE AT ALDI'S.

You know what?  Those mushrooms were such a good buy that Julie bought two boxes for our housekeeper, Donna, who loves mushrooms.  Uh, you don't have a housekeeper?  Maybe you should be a bit more frugal.  Bye-the-bye, Donna, shown left at our lakeside retreat, pays for herself many times over in the course of the year.  That's another blog.

Donna, who has become a grand companion for Julie, has enriched our lives so much over the last two years when I suffered with a bad hip and then as I recovered with a hip replacement.

She doesn't have a lot and giving small gifts like a couple boxes of mushrooms brings joy to us as well as to her.  She will soon have been with us for three years and now knows more about whats, where than I do.

Check those two cartons of Roma Tomatoes.  Have you bought tomatoes lately?  These were only $0.59 a carton, ONE DAY ONLY SALE.  A package of cut up cabbage for cole slaw cost me $1.49, a 25%+ increase over the last month.  Julie bought this whole head of cabbage for a planned pot of vegetable soup for only $1.49.  She couldn't find any turnips for the soup, although she went to three stores.  Unusual!  Turnips keep well, too.

SHE BOUGHT EVERYTHING ON THE TABLE ABOVE, PLUS TWO MORE BOXES OF MUSHROOMS, FOR $14.03.  The normal price would have been above $30.00 easily!  Except for fresh fruit and vegetables, we buy about everything bulk, by the case.  ALMOST EVERYTHING BOUGHT ON SALE!  What can't be bought on sale, we mostly buy at Sam's Warehouse Club.

BEING FRUGAL DOESN'T MEAN BEING CHEAP!
iT MEANS BEING ECONOMICAL AND AVOIDING WASTE
Catherine Pulsifer

Next Saturday evening, Julie and I are hosting my daughter, Kimberly, her husband Jack, my son, Mark, his wife, Mary Kay in this maginificant setting.  We have reservations for fireside seating at 6:30PM.  When our dining group met here last summer, I made the reservations for the Hanover House and bed and breakfast with the Inn.  The Hanover House is older than the Inn.   Abraham Lincoln once spoke at this Spread Eagle Tavern and Inn.

HOW CAN WE AFFORD THIS ON, AT BEST, MODEST INCOME?

IT IS THRIFTY TO PREPARE FOR THE WANTS OF TOMORROW - Aesop

The answer is simple!  My lovely wife pays $0.98 for four green peppers instead of $4.00.  Multiply that by our entire lifestyle and you will understand how we do so much with so little.  THAT AND PLANNING.  Bit-by-bit, over a year, almost, I've already paid the $500 for the Hanover House plus a bit more for six dinners at the Inn.  I rarely have $500 to spend, but each month I've managed to have $50 for ten months.  Do the math.  Cross-country camping trip and a visit with an old friend?  Plan and do the math.  Month in a beach front suite, pictured above,  with family and friends? Plan and do the math.

NEVER LET THE DEFEAT OF YOUR PAST
ROB YOUR SUCCESS OF YOUR FUTURE. - Ray Comfort

Uh, one other thing!  No debt!  We own our home, the lakeside retreat, two older cars and an older van, four old boats, don't gamble, don't do drugs and do not own a credit card.  YES, I AM BEHIND THE TIMES, THANK GOODNESS!  It's a good life, why don't you join me?  You can you know!

What do I do when I run out of money? I STOP SPENDING!  Not a bad thing, huh?    We are disciplined to never, never use long term savings on short term needs or opportunities.  I get paid the first of the month and am thankful for short months!  Leap Year?  BOO!

AMERICA IS BEING PLACED IN DANGER! Learn From History Or Be Doomed To Repeat It!

THE MILTARY DON'T START WARS, POLITICIANS START WARS

RIGHT IS IT'S OWN DEFENSE

America was at peace.  Wanting to insure we stayed that way, President Theodore "Speak softly and carry a big stick" Roosevelt sailed a great white fleet of 16 battleships around the world.  The circumnavigation was to notifiy the world that America could and would enforce treaties and protect American holdings around the world.  The 14 month voyage, starting in December 1907, was a grand pagent of American sea power.

PRESIDENT TEDDY, THE ROUGH RIDER, ROOSEVELT NEVER FELT THE NEED TO APOLOGIZE FOR AMERICA NOR TO BOW DOWN TO ANY FOREIGN LEADERS!

Taft replaced Theodore Roosevelt for one term and he was then replaced by Woodroe Wilson in 1912.  Wilson was a pacifist and against the military.  Although war was obviously heading our way, Wilson insisted on strict neutrality.  After the sinking of the Lusitania, as part of German's newly announced submarine warfare, he was forced into war.  Wilson insisted that the war be declared against the German Government and not the German people.  When the war ended, the U.S. Senate refused to ratify the Treaty of Versailles, Wilson travelled around the nation trying to personally sell the American people on the Paris Peace Agreement.  On this trip he suffered a dibilitating stroke from which he never recovered.

Wilson had a lot in common with Barack Hussein Obama.  He was a pretty smooth character albeit, without a teleprompter..  The son of a Presbyterian minister, he was the only President to enter office with a Ph.D.  Although he managed with slick talk and promises to win the African American vote for a second term, he was a strict racist who betrayed them.  Southern born, he eulogized the South and lamented the period or reconstruction following the American Civil War.  He promoted southern segregation.

The American military was allowed to go into a deep relaspe of power as other countries obviously were building military might.  The U.S. Senate was right, the Treaty of Versailles was not worth the paper it was written on.  Germany was not allowed to again unite with Austria, they did.  All countries were to reduce their armed forces to the lowest level possible.  We did, Germany and Japan did just the opposite.

.  The Germans, who were allowed only a 100,000 man army with no tanks, only a 6 ship navy, and no submarines at all, and no air force, totally ignored this treaty.  The Japanese did likewise, building up a great naval power.  They both ignored the paper agreement, and as American power dwindled, theirs grew by leaps and bounds, the Japanese with a large Navy and the Germans with all matter of the then most modern warfare, tanks and planes.

The only thing that saved America was that FDR, who had been the Secretary of the Navy, misappropariated funds to build up the Navy and the then, Army Air Force.  Thank goodness, as two of the carriers that turned the tide at the Battle of Midway were the Hornet and the Enterprise which FDR built.

Fast forward to President Jimmy Carter, another anti-military president.  In his one term he so reduced the efficiency of the military that we could not make a cross dessert flight to rescue 66 hostages in Iran.  Instead, after tweaking Carter's nose for years, America was futher ridiculed with Iranian picures to the world of our downed planes and helicopters.  (NOW WE HAVE PRESIDENT OBAMA'S NOSE BEING TWEAKED BY THE IRANIANS).
PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH
President Ronald Reagan resisted all efforts to weaken our Armed Forces.
He built up the regular forces and put into action star war type missle defense.
He told Kruschev to "TEAR DOWN THIS WALL".  He did!
He didn't have to tell Iran to release the hostages, they did, immediately.
REAGAN ACCUSED CARTER OF BEING WEAK AND VACILLATING,
INVITING ENEMIES TO ATTACK THE USA AND OUR ALLIES.

Fast forward to President George W. Bush.  Immediately following the attack on America on 9/11, our military forces, in two weeks, put down the 4th largest army in the world on their own home ground.  SHOCK AND AWE.   I think history will say that we would have been better off had we brought our troops home and not got into nation building.  Iraq and Afganistan have always been contentious people who, through various tribes and religiious beliefs, have fought with one another.  I don't think we will have changed that in the long run, and that at an unacceptable loss of American lives.

ONLY THOSE WHO ARE IDEOLOGICAL OPPOSED TO MILTARY PROGRAMS
THINK OF THE DEFENSE BUDGET
AS THE FIRST AND BEST PLACE TO GET RESOURCES
FOR SOCIAL AND WELFARE NEEDS - Herman Kahn

China is rapidly building a large military force.  WE CANNOT TRADE BODY FOR BODY WITH THE CHINESE.  They have just built their first aircraft carrier, not needed for defense of their homeland.  Iran is rapidly getting nuclear capabilities with Israel and the USA as clear targets.
PRESIDENT OBAMA IS UNILATERIALLY REDUCING OUR MILTARY CAPABILITY.  HE PLEDGED TO ELIMINATE OUR NUCLEAR SUPERIORITY, HE IS DOING JUST THAT.

America's homeland is enjoying peace through strength, as Reagan described.  We clearly have superior forces and technology, such as this new attack carrier, the USS INDEPENDENCE LCS2 with another 50 scheduled to be built.  Odds are, they will not be built.

GO NAVY!

FDR kept his officers and enlisted noncoms on hand with the CCC programs, knowing that such skills take a long time to replace.  President Obama is putting all this at risk reducing defense spending in order to finance his "transfer of wealth" program.

Reading his teleprompter, President Obama can make it out to be sound, fiscal policy.  Don't be mislead by his slick, presentations.  He is most experienced as a college lecturer.  He has zip executive experience and it shows.

THERE ARE NO MISTAKES IN LIFE, ONLY LESSONS

LIFE IS MADE UP OF YEARS THAT MEAN NOTHING AND MOMENTS THAT MEAN ALL

Twenty-six years ago this morning, my wife, Julie, and I met my son, Mark, and his wife, Mary Kay, for breakfast at the Sheraton, Maui at Ka'anapali Beach, pictured above.  Mark ate a humongous waffle.  Mary Kay broke her toe on a piece of coral.  I recall the day vividedly.  We got in late the night before because of difficulties with the Maui Shuttle from Honolulu.  When we met I informed the kids that "the shuttle blew up this morning, all lives were lost".   Mark replied "It's a good thing we came in on it last night".  I explained that I was talking about the space shuttle, Challenger.

The shuttle crew were explorers just as much as was Christopher Columbus or Magellian. .

The tradegy was shared by school children across the country who had come to school early to observe the space launch.

My daughter, Kimberly, through the astronaut's father, was acquainted with Judith Resnic.

The other astronauts were Michael J. Smith, Dick Scobee, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Gregory Jarvis and Chista McAuliffe

.  DON'T LET THE DARKNESS OF THE PAST
COVER THE BRIGHTNESS OF THE FUTURE

MOMENTS TO REMEMBER

I heard about the assination of President John F. Kennedy on the radio of my new 1963 Ford driving to my job as a foreman in the Curing Division of the Seiberling Tire and Rubber Company.

LIFE IS MADE UP OF YEARS
 THAT MEAN NOTHING
AND MOMENTS
THAT MEAN ALL

I also learned of the bombing of the World Trade Center on the radio.  I was outside at our lakeside retreat, painting, when the news was announced.  At first I thought New York was being attacked by bombers, much like Pearl Harbor.

I remember walking across the street to tell a neighbor who was working on his house.  He poo-poo'd the news.

I was driving home from work when I heard about the collaspe of the Silver Bridge, across the Ohio River in my home town of Point Pleasant, WV with a loss of 55 lives.

My brother, Henry, riding in a car pool heading for work, was one block off the bridge when it went down.

A high school girl friend, Naomi Patterson, and her five daughters were unaccounted for and feared lost.  They were alright.

ONCE IN A WHILE, RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF AN ORDINARY LIFE,
LOVE GIVES US A FAIRY TALE

I remember distinctly the births of each of my three children.  I also remember the births of each of my nine grandchildren, I was present for each of them.  I didn't make it to the births of my seven great grandchildren, but I treasure each of them.  I remember holding Jennifer, the first grandchild when she was brought home from the hospital.  I remember taking Riley, shown on the left, for his first trip to MacDonalds.  I remember teaching  Riley to say "Snot Rag" to his mother's horror.  Yes, I went right out and bought him several big, red hankies.  At the same time, I bought him his first belt.  A boy should have a belt.
