Francis Rose (Dianah) Shore was born in 1918, in Winchester, Tennessee to Jewish, Russian imigrants.  At the age of two, Dianah had infantile paralysis which left her with a deformed foot and a limp.  She did not let that handicap stop her from being a high school cheerleader.  After college she failed in auditions for big name bands such as Benny Goodman or Jimmy Dorsey.  She didn't let that stop her from singing.  She struck out on her own to become the first solo singer of the 40's and 50's to achieve huge success, setting a very high bar for singers like Patti Page or Doris Day who were to follow her.  In addition to over four decades on television and movies, she had 80 songs on the charts, including such songs as "Shoo Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy".  Today, I was reminded of another Dianah Shore hit, "Dear Hearts and Gentle People".

As I got out of my car with my cane in the Sam's parking lot, I was next to a man loading his purchases from a handicap scooter into his car.  He asked if I wanted the scooter.  I thanked him telling him that I was recovering from a hip replacement.  He said that he had bad knees and cancer of the hip.  Cheerfully, he said that he guessed things started to wear out at age 80.  He looked to be about 65 years of age--I hear that said about me all the time, but it was true. We chatted and as we parted he gave me this small key chain which he said he made.  On the back side of the leather was written "Phil. 4:13".  I thanked him and gave him my blog address and said I'd write an article on him.
