IT IS NOT TRUE THAT PEOPLE STOP PURSUING DREAMS BECAUSE THEY ARE OLD, THEY GROW OLD BECAUSE THEY STOP PURSUING DREAMS
Gabriel Garcia Marquez
A MAN IS NOT OLD UNTIL REGRETS TAKES THE PLACE OF DREAMS
Once, I liked nothing better than to bundle up and walk into the wind of a blizzard. Now, I do not like being cold.
I will get through another winter, dreaming at my computer It is as if we all have our own time machines. Some take us back, they are memories, some forward, they are dreams.
DREAMS, IDEAS AND PLANS NOT ONLY ARE NOT AN ESCAPE,
THEY GIVE ME A PURPOSE, A REASON TO HANG ON.
I dream of sailing my sailboat, the s/v Christy Anne, this summer. It is a 20 foot Oday Mariner, small enough for one to handle well yet with two comfortable bunks in a snug cabin and a large cockpit. I've made long cruises in this little beauty in the past and dream of doing so again.
ALL OUR DREAMS CAN COME TRUE
IF WE HAVE THE COURAGE GO PURSUE THEM
One way to make excellent use of the boat is to "Trailer Sail". I have an excellent trailer and can pull the boat to any part of the country, sail and return home.
Traveling, I can use the boat as an RV to sleep in on the road. Pulling the boat with my van, however, I'll probably sleep in the van.
The Florida Keys to the many lakes and rivers across the country, the choice is endless.
KEEP YOUR DREAMS ALIVE. UNDERSTAND THAT TO ACHIEVE ANYTHING,REQUIRES FAITH AND BELIEF IN YOURSELF, VISION, HARD
WORK, DETERMINATION AND DEDICATION. REMEMBER, ALL THINGS ARE
POSSIBLE TO THOSE WHO BELIEVE - Gail Devers
Each year about 150 boats sail around the eastern United States, about 5,000 miles. Although it has been done in a bit over six weeks, normally it takes six months to a year. Those who accomplish this challenge are called "Loopers"
Most of this cruise would be in protected waters, near by the shore.
THE FUTURE BELONGS TO THOSE WHO BELIEVE
IN THE REALITY OF THEIR DREAMS - Eleanor Roosevelt
There is a very active association of Loopers. They supply on-going, current information to those in the "loop and have two meetings each year.
Most "Loopers" sail large, very expensive Trawlers. That would, of course, be the most comfortable way to go. In addition to buying the boat, the fuel costs are out of sight for most people.
The "loop" has been sailed by everything from jet ski's to pontoon boats. This little 15' sailboat, without the mast, made it using two 2HP motors.
My 20' sailboat, with a new 8HP motor would be adequate.
REALITY IS WRONG, DREAMS ARE FOR REAL - Tupac Shakur
I have spent hours sailing the loop by reading Captain John's blog. It is a beautiful, informative blog with wonderful free information and pictures of the loop.
Captain John, (captainjohn.org) has made the loop nine times. He is sailing it again in a small sailboat, with his son, to determine how inexpensively it can be done.
My biggest problem in sailing the great loop would be being away from home for long periods. Over the years, I have determined that I can do alright until about six weeks. Then, I want to go home.
Four parts of the loop is sailed in the four seasons. I might sail for two months, come home for a month and continue the trip. It's a thought.
I am blessed with a good wife who supports my ramblings. Julie comes to visit me on the way and we thus enjoy the trips together.
Will I sail the great loop this year? Probably not. Over the years I have often attempted more of a goal than I could achieve. That being said, I know of no one who has accomplished what I have, although my son, Todd, is getting close with his recumbent bike. I will absolutely, the good Lord willing and the krick don't rise, spent 4 weeks on the Ohio River near my hometown of Point Pleasant, WV come summer. A few more weeks of dreaming!
