COUNTRY MUSIC: From Hee Haw to Jug Bands, People Love It!

TRUE AMERICANS, ALL!

COUNTRY MUSIC IS 3 CHORDS AND THE TRUTH - Harland Howard

The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee was the Mother Church of country music.  A weekly country music stage concert, the Grand Ole Opry, has presented the biggest stars in that genre since 1925.  I visited this original location of the home of country music in 1959 with good friends, Jeral and Pebble Davis.

COUNTRY MUSIC IS SO RELATED TO GOSPEL - Dionne Warwick

Along with Grandpa Jones and String Bean, Grand Ole Orpy and the Old Tyme Jug Band, Opry stars of the 50's, such as The Carter Family, Charley Pride, and Lulu Belle and Scotty are what I think of as music.

I sang such iconic songs as "The Bald Headed End of a Broom", "The Crawdad Song", and "Old Blue" to my children's amusement when they were young.

On a trip, my singing was a sure way to get the radio turned on.  Un Huh!  That ain't changed much!  "How Many Biscuits Can You Eat This Morning?"

COUNTRY MUSIC IS STILL YOUR GRANDPA'S MUSIC
BUT IT'S ALSO YOUR DAUGHTER'S MUSIC - Shania Twain

"Hee Haw" was an American television variety show featuring country music and humor from fictional, rural "Kornfield County".  Co-hosted by Buck Owens and Roy Clark, the show was well known for it's voluptuous, scantily-clad women in sterotypical farmer's daughter's outfits.  Hee Haw was not limited to a rural audience but was successful in all major markets.  People liked Hee Haw.

THERE IS A GREAT ENTHUSIASM FOR COUNTRY MUSIC ALL OVER THE WORLD
Willie Nelson

"I've seen country music go up town, as they say, and I'm proud I was there when it happened" - Loretta Lynn

Go uptown, it did!  Even the "Muppets" had a jug band.  In 1979 Kermit, Miss piggy and Fozzle were joined in "Emmit Otter's Jug Band" with John Denver.  A huge hit, this Christmas program can still be enjoyed over the Christmas Holidays.

THE SOGGY BOTTOM BUNCH, JUG BAND, SINGERS & DANCERS

Just as rowdy entertainment, I put together a Jug Band for a "Welcome Spring" party.  A banjo, washtub bass, tambourine, washboard, juice harp, harmonica, kazoo, spoons, jug and whistle made up the instruments played by musicians-so-called.  We did have some great singers who carried the party.  We added a "Virginia Reel" and it was all a real big hit!

Unfortunately, the pastor from the Dalton, Ohio United Methodist Church was present and invited the band to play the following Sunday at an old time church service she was having.  We accepted.    For the "farce" at the party, we had only practiced a couple times.  At the party it didn't matter.  Before a quiet audience at the church, it was a disaster, and that's putting it kindly.  We didn't start together, we didn't play or sing together and we didn't end together.  The congregation raved!  We were a big hit!

The band members wanted to continue so we started to practice every Monday.  Adding enough foolishness, like waving big red bloomers to songs like "She'll be Coming 'Round the Mountain", and hamming it up a lot, we did a lot of shows, which amazingly, people really enjoyed.  We had more invitations than we wanted.  It got to be work!

A television production crew came to a hoedown where we were playing, singing, dancing, and doing hog calling, and made two television shows which they said would show between 40 and 90 times.  I saw the show on TV 20 times.  They sold DVDs of our shows for $25.  We discontinued the band when my left hip went bad and lifting the equipment and the banjo became more than I could handle.

PEOPLE LIKE COUNTRY MUSIC, EVEN BAD COUNTRY MUSIC!

AMERICA GOING TO HELL IN A HAND BASKET? Hardly!

Wisdom   Wisdom   Wisdom   Wisdom   Wisdom   Wisdom   Wisdom   Wisdom

IF WE ARE TO GO FORWARD, WE MUST GO BACK AND REDISCOVER
THOSE PRECIOUS VALUES - THAT ALL REALITY HINGES ON MORAL
FOUNDATIONS AND THAT ALL REALITY HAS SPIRITUAL CONTROL.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

WE MUST ADJUST TO THE CHANGING TIMES
AND STILL HOLD ONTO OUR UNCHANGING PRINCIPLES - Jimmy Carter

Conservative talk show host, Rush Limbaugh, opines that "There is such cultural rot taking place, such a disintegration throughout our culture.  Values, Morality, you name it.  Standards have been relaxed, and people are not held to them.  People's intentions, if they're said to be good, that's all that matters".

"ALL THAT MATTERS?"  A case can be made that America is "going to hell in a hand basket" but that is not the whole case.  Yesterday, I saw 18 good reasons why it is not!

GREAT THINGS ARE NOT ACCOMPLISHED BY THOSE WHO YIELD
TO TRENDS AND FADS AND POPULAR OPINION - Jack Kerouac

My 14-year-old grandson, James Riley Pierce Boggs, seen on the left with his parents, Jack and Kimberly Boggs, graduated yesterday in the 2013 Confirmation Class of the Church of the Lakes United Methodist Church.  Along with his other 17 class members, Riley took his Christian vow to be a Christ follower throughout his life.  America's hope lies in the vows of such young people.  (Riley on the extreme right above).

Their vows were clearly their own, not their pastor's nor their parents.

FOLLOW SOUND TRENDS, NOT FASHION TRENDS - Janice Dickinson

John Wesley, mid 18th century church founder, said "Though we may not think alike, may we not all love alike?"  The class learned that the church's belief of "In essentials, unity, in non-essentials, liberty, in all things, charity" allowed such diverse fellow church members as President George W. Bush (R) and Secretary of State, Hillary R. Clinton (D).  Enlightened leadership is spiritual if we understand spirituality not as some kind of religious dogma or ideology but as a domain of awareness where we experience truth, goodness, beauty, love, tolerance and compassion.

In addition to the once-a-week study for eight months, the eighteen young men and women, TOMORROW'S LEADERS ALL, visited other religious groups and performed community services.  They attended Jewish, Roman Catholic and African American Apostolic Pentecostal services.  Riley's mother was concerned when informed that she would be called for Riley's pickup time from the Apostolic service because they never knew "How long the Spirit would lead".   She knew his teachings had been successful when informed that they enjoyed, what they referred to as the "Rock and Roll" church, the best....had never been hugged so much by so many different people.

DON'T FOLLOW TRENDS, START TRENDS - Frank Capra

John and I were lucky because our mother was a strong woman with high expectations and a strong sense of values", so said Caroline Kennedy.  Riley came from like family stock.  His great aunt Rose, pictured left, well past 90 years-of-age, still lives alone taking care of herself, without the need for any medications.  She, along with many others, attended a catered reception held for Riley by his parents.  Gov. Rick Perry said "We've got the world by the tail now.  Americans are waking up to the realities of their previous choices.  We must keep America moving back to preeminence because her values are the worlds greatest hope".

Marco Rubio said "We are special because we've been united
not by a common race or ethnicity.
We're bound together by common values.
That family is the most important institution in society.
That almighty God is the source of all we have. "

NO WAY AMERICA IS GOING TO HELL IN A HAND BASKET!

THE EASTON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH BEAN SUPPER

MY COUNTRY IS THE WORLD, AND MY RELIGION IS TO DO GOOD
Thomas Paine

The sanctuary of the United Methodist Church in Easton, Ohio has been prepared for Worship Service tomorrow morning, just as it has been since 1878.  Tonight, however, it is another traditional service, dating back to the Great Depression of the 30's, a Community Bean Supper.  Although the depression is now only a bad memory, the Bean Supper is still a part of the community in the spring and in the fall.

BEANS REPRESENT YOUR THREE STAGES OF MATTER,
SOLID, LIQUID, AND EVENTUALLY, GAS

GRANDPA JONES WASN'T WITH US TONIGHT
BUT HE WOULD HAVE FELT RIGHT-TO-HOME

Norma and Eilene stood ready to dish up the beans when the diners started early, around 4:30.  The bean supper is from 5:00 to 7:00 PM but folks always come early.  All the food is donated and prepared by the members.  I saved a large ham bone from the Easter ham for my 8 pounds of beans.  A lot of people, including Julie, baked cornbread.  There were cut up sweet onions and assorted relishes.

HEY GRANDPA, WHAT'S FOR SUPPER?

Here's whats on the menu tonight: Aw, fresh turnip greens and cornbread too,
and a great big dish of mulligan stew and rice puddin' hot,
simmering in the pan, and piping hot coffee, beat it if you can.

The oldest couple present were Delbert and Connie Rausechenberg.  Delbert, born into the church some 91 years ago, was present at the very first bean supper.  His grandmother, a German immigrant, was a member of the church.  Delbert was a true hero serving in the U.S. Navy in World War II.  Few men have been involved in a beach invasion.  Delbert, a cox'n on a landing craft, was involved in no less than six invasions across the Pacific.

HEY GRANDPA, WHAT'S FOR SUPPER?

Here's what on the menu tonight:  Navy bean soup, to start the meal,
and beef that'll thrill you from head to heel.
Okre, rice and tomaters too, and sassafras tea, boy what a brew!

Families get together at the bean supper, here the Ludwig family.  Carla standing, and Bill with the yellow hat, are members of the church.  Carla was born into the church and she was in my oldest son's high school graduation class.  Some out-of-town friends of many years standing come to the spring and fall bean suppers, allowing for semiannual fellowship where we catch up on one another's families.

HEY GRANDPA, WHATS FOR SUPPER?

Here's whats on the menu tonight:  Boiled backbone and fried corn mush,
and potaters that would make a starvin' man hush.
Strong cup of coffee and coconut pie.  I believe to my soul, it stands 3 inches high

There is no count of the people who come and go over the two or three hour period, but I'm sure it is in the hundreds.  There are about four rows of tables that are full, most of the time.  There is no charge for the food but donations are accepted, just put your money in the big glass jar.   Tonight the donations totaled $402.  Added to the donations, however, must be the cost of the food which the members donate.

HEY GRANDPA, WHAT'S FOR SUPPER?

Here's what on the menu tonight: Fresh beef steak and fresh made slaw
and stewed apples fit for your mother-in-law, and hot baked biscuits
with creamy butter and milk so cold it'll make you shutter

My mother always told me, "Son, you be nice to the ladies in the kitchen".  That was easy to do tonight.  The lady in the yellow sweat shirt is my lovely wife, Julie, and, working with her, keeping the food flowing, was our good friend, Sally Wilson.  There is a lot of work involved in such a large supper, refilling the cornbread and relish dishes on the table, cleaning up spills and returning dirty dishes to the kitchen.

HEY GRANDPA, WHAT'S FOR SUPPER?

Here's what's on the menu tonight:  Baked possum and sweet potaters
and whole kernel corn and stewed tomaters,
and ripe musk mellon and rhubarb pie and a good cup of coffee that'll take your eye

Life is short, eat your dessert first!  I did, so did a lot of other people.   I had a piece of strawberry-rhubarb pie.  I thought they would never cut it.  I knew it was there, I brought it.  Everybody brought dessert of every kind imaginable.  I also had a piece of Sally Wilson's raisin pie--haven't had that since the last bean supper.  The table holds right at a hundred plates of dessert and it is replaced all night long.  The last people to leave always take dessert--and beans too--home with them.  Over and above that, there will be dessert abundant for Sunday School.

HEY GRANDPA, WHAT'S FOR SUPPER?

Here's what on the menu tonight:  Well, would you like to have
some good mutten stew?  You can, and lots of mint jelly too.
Fresh hot biscuits, baked to a tee, and apple cider for you and me.

Can't forget the hardest working members of the entire crew, the dish washers.  Don and Beth are scrubbing up the pans now--I think that's my big pot Don's working on.  Different people take turn at this job, but Don stayed with it most of the night.  I used to really enjoy doing the dishes but now I use my replaced left hip as an excuse to get out of it.  Whatever works, huh?

HEE HAW, YOU'ALL COME BACK NOW, YA HEAR
Next Bean Supper In October

THE WHEEL OF CHANGE MOVES ON, AND THOSE WHO WERE DOWN
GO UP AND THOSE WHO WERE UP GO DOWN - Jawaharlal Nehru

As the Native Americans viewed the newly built railroads with wonder in the mid 1800's, they looked upon the white men who built them with disdain.  The red man was so numerous and strong while the white pioneers in their small wagon trains were so weak and vulnerable.

Change came.  The white men came and came and came. Today the red men are no longer the free spirits they once were but live wretched lives on reservations.

THE BAMBOO THAT BENDS IS STRONGER
THAN THE OAK THAT RESISTS - Japanese Proverb

It was a new century, the 1900's!  Could things ever be better in America?  The chaotic years after the American Civil War were over.  Optimistically, America looked forward to a century of growth and expansion.....and peace.    None could know that the 20th century would be fraught with wars that would bring anguish to the people.
"Tote that bale, heave that barge and old man river, lazy old man river, he'll just keep rolling, keep on rolling along".

IF YOU'RE IN A BAD SITUATION, DON'T WORRY, IT'LL CHANGE
IF YOU'RE IN A GOOD SITUATION, DON'T WORRY, IT'LL CHANGE
John A. Simone

The Japanese Samurai represented the world's greatest fighting men throughout the centuries.  Little Japan defeated the great bear, Russia.  During the 1930's the Japanese armies conquered the Far East.  Ignoring the agreements made following World War I, the Japanese built a mighty naval power.  When America denied them steel and oil, necessary war materials, the Japanese retaliated with the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A RUT AND A GRAVE
ARE THEIR DIMENSIONS - Ellen Glasgow

In three short years, filled with death, destruction and heart break for all, the Japanese forces were in a full retreat, a valorous rout but a rout none-the-less.  Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamomoto's statement on the attack of Pearl Harbor, "I fear all we have done is awaken a sleeping giant and filled him with a terrible resolve" proved to be true.  In the picture on the right a Japanese plane is downed at the Battle of Saipan in 1944.  From here America bombers dropped atomic bombs killing approximately 166,000 in Hiroshima and 80,000 in Nagasaki.  The war ended but the world was changed forever.

IT'S HARD TO GET USED TO THE CHANGING TIMES.
I REMEMBER WHEN THE AIR WAS CLEAN AND SEX WAS DIRTY
George F. Burns

In this rare picture of Winston Churchill, we see a man that life prepared for war.  The grandson of the 7th Duke of Marlborough, the son of Lord Randolph Churchill and Jeannie Jerome, an American socialite, Churchill saw action as a young Army officer in British India, the Sudan, the Second Boer War and was the  Commander of the 6th Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers.  He became the English Prime Minister in the war torn year of 1940.

Change would find the right man for the right job.

IF YOU WANT TO MAKE ENEMIES, TRY TO CHANGE SOMETHING
Woodrow Wilson

In 1940 the sky over Big Ben was streaked in the Air Battle of London.  The smaller, slower and less efficient Spitfire fighters of the Royal Air Force gallantly defended their homeland.   The Nazi's were overpowering with wave after wave of bombers that could not be deterred.  All of Europe had fallen to the Nazi juggernaut.  England stood alone but steadfastly refused to consider defeat, surrender or to make a compromised peace.  With America's help, change came.  Berlin was destroyed, London was bloodied but survived.
