SOME PEOPLE ASK THE SECRET OF OUR LONG MARRIAGE.  WE TAKE TIME TO GO TO A RESTAURANT TWO TIMES A WEEK.  A LITTLE CANDLE LIGHT, DINNER, SOFT MUSIC, DANCING - SHE GOES ON TUESDAYS, I GO ON THURSDAYS.

THE OTHER NIGHT I WENT TO A REAL NICE FAMILY RESTAURANT.  EVERY TABLE HAD AN ARGUMENT GOING  - George Carlin

MARK AND MARY KAY, WEST VIEW
My son, Mark,  and his wife, Mary Kay, seen here at a  west view from of our beach front condo, has been our most frequent guest in our 26 years of spending the month of October at the beach.   Our leased penthouse suite just south of Myrtle Beach. SC requires a key to get to our 16th floor.  This is their 18th year of sharing with my wife, Julie, and I.
Mark is Pastor of  Church Requel in Mansfield, Ohio.   Mary Kay, a 4 year graduate from the University of Akron School of Nursing, is Director of the National Association of the Mentally Ill.  Whether it is going to a new restaurant or playing cards, they always Let The Good Times Roll.

FAMILY IS NOT AN IMPORTANT THING, IT IS THE ONLY THING - Desmond Tutu

GRANDDAUGHTER JILLIAN
GREAT GRANDSON TITUS
My granddaughter, Jill, is getting her 9-month-old son, Titus, off to a good start at Grandpa's beach house.  She is showing him the grandeur of the beach.  Hurricane Joaquin had passed a couple days ago but that's in the past.  Now it is sunny skies and a peaceful surf.  During the hurricane we hunkered down in the constant down pour of rain and surf that actually came up over the deck of the condo.  The elevator would not go to the lower floor.

IN A RESTAURANT, CHOOSE A TABLE NEAR A WAITER - Jewish Proverb

WALT AND JESSI
You can't "Let The Good Times Roll" without tripping the light fantastic, can you?  Nah!  Here I am dancing with my Grand Daughter, Jessica.  Jessi has visited us at the beach since she was a child.  Now, she is a Respiratory Therapist keeping premmie babies alive.  How important is that?  She has visited us for a week for the last three years.  She is a great guest as she always shares in the costs involved in a month long party.  Even more important, she is ready to go to shows, play cards or play with her young nephew, whatever.  When she left I reminded her that we'd be looking for her back in eleven months.

WHEN YOU GO TO A RESTAURANT, THE LESS YOU KNOW ABOUT WHAT GOES ON IN THE KITCHEN THE MORE YOU WILL ENJOY YOUR FOOD - Jeffery Wright

DAVE
No, No!  We are not always on the go, shopping or cooking.  We don't go to shows or the beach all the time.  From doing those things, however, one needs a bit of rest.  Makes sense, huh?  Here we see Dave, Jessi's husband giving up reading his kindle and taking a snooze.  Dave is hard working and just a good guy!  He plays a bass guitar and is a whiz electronically, something the entire family appreciates.  He is also a sports nut, which means he fits right in with the Pierce family.  Julie and Mark both brought a zero gravity chair but they became a first come first use thing.  This time Dave was first in line.  Looks like he needed it.   We all get rest at the beach, me more than anyone else, I guess.

A CANNIBAL IS A PERSON WHO GOES INTO A RESTAURANT AND ORDERS A WAITER - P. Wodehouse

ROSEBUD AND TITUS
This is a picture of my youngest grand child and youngest great grand child.  Delaney Rose Pierce Boggs, "Rosebud", now 14 , flew  from Cleveland, Ohio to Myrtle Beach by herself, which cost her parents a double airline fare.  She and her Nana Julie are special "Buds".  They follow the same TV shows and go to movies together.   They have dinner together about once a week.  Here "Rosebud" is taking her turn caring for the little one.

TO US, FAMILY MEANS PUTTING YOUR ARMS AROUND EACH OTHER AND BEING THERE - Barbara Bush

LOBSTER DINNER
There may be more restaurants in Myrtle Beach than any where else on planet Earth.  This is a lobster platter that Julie enjoyed when Mark and Mary Kay treated us to dinner.  Previously, we took them to their favorite restaurant for Mark's Christmas present.   He had to wait for ten months but didn't mind.

THE LOVE OF FAMILY AND THE ADMIRATION OF FRIENDS IS MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN WEALTH AND PRIVILEGE - Charles Kuralt

Credit card, anyone?  Surly you can't go wrong with a pretty girl like this, can you?  She is so pure, she doesn't even wear makeup.  Which would you like?  Want to make it personal with a picture of your children? Those credit card people must really like you.  Sure, and pigs really do fly!

A study of McDonald's found that people spend 47% more, - Uh, that's almost half folks - when people paid with a credit card.  That is money people could save, but don't.  I've watched as minority kids, obviously poor, use a credit card to pay for McDonald's most expensive food.  I buy the $1.00 McChicken and pay cash.

PROCRASTINATION IS LIKE A CREDIT CARD.  IT'S A LOT OF FUN UNTIL YOU GET THE BILL - Christopher Parker

THERE IS A WAR ON AGAINST USING CASH!   You will be told that only the poor use cash.  That money is the poor man's credit card.  HOG WASH!  I am not poor, and I use cash. You can bet someone wants your cash for their credit.  When you use cash, you can feel the cash leaving you, you spend less.  When you flip a card on the counter, you feel nothing emotionally, and so, therefore, you spend more.

NO MAN'S CREDIT IS EVER AS GOOD AS HIS CASH - Edgar Watson Howe

You can live the life of the "grass hopper" and fiddle your money away.  Or, you can be an "ant" and save for the certainty of winter and hard times.  It is up to you, not those who push credit cards.  YOU WILL SPEND MORE IF YOU USE A CREDIT CARD!  Even paying the bill on time, you are not beating the system if you buy more, are you?  BUT, MOST FAMILIES DO NOT PAY ON TIME.  The average family carries $8,000 in credit card debt, according to the American Bankers Association.

CREDIT CARD INTEREST PAYMENTS ARE THE DUMBEST MONEY OF ALL - Hill Harper

Yes, credit cards are convenient.  And, unfortunately, they are absolutely necessary at times.  You cannot stay in a motel without a credit card.  If one could be disciplined not to over spend, and pay on time, you will still spend less with cash.

YOUTH IS HAPPY BECAUSE IT HAS THE ABILITY TO SEE BEAUTY.  ANYONE WHO KEEPS THE ABILITY TO SEE BEAUTY NEVER GROWS OLD -  Franz Kafka

MAY BE NO FOOL LIKE AN OLD FOOL, BUT OUR OBSERVATION HAS BEEN THAT THE YOUNG FOOL RUNS HIM A CLOSE SECOND - Gonzales

RILEY AND DELANEY ROSE
Ages 16 and 14

The youngest of nine grandchildren, Riley is 16 and his sister, Delaney Rose, is 14, a junior and a freshman in one of the nation's top high schools.  My wife and I have been quite involved in their lives, my wife at this very moment going to dinner with "Rosebud".  The kids are blessed with two far above average parents, educated, loving and involved.  They live in a home just a bit short of being a mansion, which took two years to build to their parents specifications.  With all this going for them, I watch as they struggle growing through youth, all very normal.  I am made to think of how much I missed, or not, in my youth.

IN YOUTH WE RUN INTO DIFFICULTIES.  IN OLD AGE DIFFICULTIES RUN INTO US -  Beverly Sills

WALT PIERCE
A Senior At 16
I never knew the blessings that Riley and "Rosebud" can take for granted.  Born at the start of a world wide depression, I was so big that I went to the first grade when I was only 5.  When I was Riley and "Rosebud's" age, I lived by myself on $10.00 a week.  My apartment costs $5.00 a week leaving me $5.00 for every thing else.  I lied about my age, after all, I was a senior in high school, so obviously I was at least 18, and I joined the West Virginia National Guard, which paid me $18.00 a month, $37.00 when the Guard was called out for a flood in 1947.  Even though I doubled my spendable income, by then I had discovered girls and acquired an old car.  Yes, gas was only about a quarter a gallon, still and yet!  I did not have enough food to eat going from 172 when I played football to 166 when I joined the Navy.

Yet, I had full freedom in my youth, some thing that few have.  Yes, I also had the full responsibility for my life that almost none had.  Although no one would ever know the difference, I never missed a day of school.  That being said, from time-to-time I fell asleep in class from playing rum all night with an older friend, a madam in a whore house.

IN YOUTH THE DAYS ARE SHORT AND THE YEARS ARE LONG.  IN OLD AGE THE YEARS ARE SHORT AND THE DAYS ARE LONG - Pope Paul VI

WALT AGE 17
In Boot Camp
ONE SMALL STEP FOR MAN, ONE GIANT STEP FOR MANKIND!  Nah!  Probably not, but my youth took one giant step upward when I was 17.  I joined the Navy.  I graduated from high school on May 22, 1948 and wanted to go right in the Navy but at age 17, my parents had to sign for me and wouldn't.  Well, they wouldn't until they started being informed about the wild and rowdy life I was living.  I was sworn into the Navy on July 22, 1948.  I THOUGHT I WAS IN HEAVEN!  Sure the drill instructors were tough, but none as tough as my Dad.  I was a boxer and played football and boot camp was just another team.  I loved boot camp.  AND, FOOD, ALL YOU WANTED!  My weight jumped from 166 to 218, an not an ounce of fat.  I was the only guy who didn't complain about the baked beans and corn bread on Saturday morning, a  Navy tradition.

TO GET BACK MY YOUTH I'D DO ANYTHING IN THE WORLD, EXCEPT TAKE EXERCISE, GET UP EARLY, OR BE RESPECTABLE - Oscar Wilde

WALT AGE 18
Aboard The USS Yuma
From the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Boot Camp, I went to a Class A Radio School in Norfolk, Va.  After learning to send and receive morse code at 18 words-a-minute, something I can still do, I was assigned to the USS YUMA ATF94 in Vallejo, California.  I was a "striker" to a Radioman Third Class, RM3, by the name of Wise.  Eventually, I was promoted to Third Class Petty Officer, RM3, and Wise was transferred.  I loved the YUMA, she was a feeder.  It was a sea going tug and a work ship.  On duty you wore jeans and a tee shirt, otherwise the most common uniform of the day was shorts and wooden shower shoes.  The best food in the world!  All you wanted!  And, being "the" radio man, I had no duty, and had far more liberty than I had money.

IN YOUTH WE LEARN, IN AGE WE UNDERSTAND - Marie von Ebner

WALT AGE 20
In The Hospital
I was in the Korean war zone when that war started and had to do a one year extension on my enlistment.  I broke my left wrist and had surgery.  I lost every thing I had as my ship sailed without me.  My greatest loss being my football varsity sweater.  Someone commented negatively about me wearing white sox in this picture.  I lost all my clothes,  which I had to pay to replace.  In the hospital, with a cast on my left arm in this picture, rules were pretty lax.  I hadn't been further north than Hawaii in three years.  Even in San Francisco, without a pea coat, I nearly froze.  When I got out of the hospital, I served a couple months on an aircraft carrier, USS INTREPID CV11 and about three months aboard the USS HEMMINGER DE746.

YOUTH IS A GIFT OF NATURE, BUT AGE IS A WORK OF ART - Jerzy LEE

I once had hundreds of employees and a large support staff in a Tire Plant.  Then, I became a Stock Broker and retired a Vice President at age 60.  What did I learn from a highly successful adult life?  That, in all truth, my greatest treasure is my family.  This picture was taken on my 80th Birthday Party with the entire family present.

Everyone of my children and grandchildren, except the two youngest,  have graduated from college, many with Master's Degrees.  I've come a long ways from my youth.  I am truly blessed.

AGING IS NOT LOST YOUTH BUT A NEW STAGE OF OPPORTUNITY AND STRENGTH - Betty Friedan

AMERICAN SONG BIRDS:  Slowly But Surely, We're Losing Them

THE EARLY BIRD GETS THE WORM BUT THE SECOND MOUSE EATS THE CHEESE - Willie Nelson

CAROLINA PARAKEET
When the Pilgrims landed there were an estimated nine billion passenger pigeons.  They are all gone.  Second in number to the carrier pigeons was the Carolina Parakeet, a lovely, innocuous bird.  They are all gone.  Increasingly from year-to-year, bird watchers and ornithologists note a steady decline in the number of song birds in America.

A BIRD DOES NOT SING BECAUSE IT HAS AN ANSWER, IT SINGS BECAUSE IT HAS A SONG - Chinese Proverb

CRESENT CHESTED WARBLER
Increased housing and shopping malls instead of fields of brush,  where song birds nested for generations.  Wind turbines and communication towers take their toll.  CATS KILL AN ESTIMATED 3.7 BILLION SONG BIRDS ANNUALLY.  Birders in every season search the woods, grasslands and wet lands finding fewer and fewer song birds.

GOD GIVES EVERY BIRD IT'S FOOD BUT HE DOESN'T THROW IT IN IT'S NEST - J. G. Holland

MOCKING BIRD
In the Mediterranean, hundreds of millions of song birds are killed each year for sport, food, and profit.  Cranes, storks and large raptors are shot.  Italy is the worse where the rural areas crackle with gun shots and song bird traps.  In 2012 a record cold winter in Eastern Europe forced geese, who normally would have stayed in the Danube Valley, to fly to Albania.  An estimated 50,000 of the tired, hungry geese were promptly shot.
BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER

EASTERN BLUE BIRD
Like the American Bald Eagle, the Eastern Blue Bird was going extinct.  Enforced federal laws and protected nesting has brought back the bald eagle.  One nests near my lake side retreat.  When my sons were young and in a Webelos Cub Scout pack, and I was the Pack Leader, we built Eastern Blue Bird housing out of natural materials and put them on a farmers fence line. This specie has  also come back.

IF IT WALKS LIKE A DUCK, QUACKS LIKE A DUCK AND LOOKS LIKE A DUCK, IT MUST BE A DUCK

BUT WHAT CAN I DO?

BLUE JAY
THERE ARE THINGS YOU CAN DO!  Make your law makers aware of the problem and ask for laws to protect song birds like those that protected eagles.  Feed the birds winter and summer.  Provide water for them, put up a bird bath and feed humming birds.

THERE'LL BE BLUE BIRDS OVER THE WHITE CLIFFS OF DOVER, TOMORROW, JUST YOU WAIT AND SEE - Nat Burton

DO NOT BE AFRAID TO GO OUT ON A LIMB.  THAT'S WHERE THE FRUIT IS

"Under the spreading chestnut tree, the village smitty stands".  Before the Chestnut Blight began killing the chestnut trees, one out of every four trees in America was the American Chestnut.

A SOCIETY GROWS GREAT WHEN OLD MEN PLANT TREES WHOSE SHADE THEY KNOW THEY WILL NEVER SIT IN - Greek Proverb

BLIGHTED CHESTNUT TREE
The Chestnut Blight first hit the American Chestnut trees in New York in 1904 and the fungus spread across the country killing what was believed to be all the American Chestnut trees, some 3,5 Billion trees!  Closely behind the number of chestnut trees was the Elm tree.  That species of tree as far as is known has also been eradicated from the country.  Around 1960 there was a reward of $50,000 for anyone who could find a living American Chestnut.  I hunted then and always looked for but never found a tree.  Thankfully, others have.

THE WOODS ARE LOVELY, DARK AND DEEP.  BUT, I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP - Robert Frost

When an American Chestnut tree is found today, it is immediately protected.  This healthy American Chestnut tree was found in a marsh in Ohio, near Lake Erie.  The Ohio Department of Natural Resources said the tree produces flowers but they aren't viable as there are no other American Chestnut trees to pollinate them.  There is an eagle nest in the top of this tree, which cannot be seen in this picture.

Lumber from American Chestnut trees are an absolute delight to work with, splits easy and straight.  If you see old time rail fences, it is Chestnut.

WHEREVER YOU GO, NO MATTER WHAT THE WEATHER, BRING YOUR OWN SUNSHINE - Anthony J. D'Angelo

Eleven miles up the Ohio River from my home town, Point Pleasant, WV, was the home of Mark Twain's paternal grand parents.  There was a grove of healthy American Chestnuts found on their farm.  It is now the Clements State Tree Nursery.

A TREE NEVER HITS A CAR EXCEPT IN SELF DEFENSE - American Proverb

The Clements State Tree Nursery produces up to 10,000 American Chestnut tree seedlings a year.  Although the seedlings are resistant to the blight, they are not immune.  They are trying to reproduce this great American treasure by producing the seedlings and selling them to those in West Virginia and neighboring states.  If you live in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana or other nearby states, you can participate in this extremely worthwhile effort.

WAX ON, WAX OFF!  I like to get several coats of paste wax on the car before winter.  The $100+ car service kit, wash and wax my wife saw on QVC, she bought at Sam's Club for fifty some dollars.  The wash cleans and rinses well, the liquid wax goes on and comes off way to easy.  Good and easy, no way!

FLOAT LIKE A CADILLAC, STING LIKE A BEAMER - L. McQueen

Following the "bosses" orders, like the good employee/husband that I am, I washed and waxed our new (to us) Lincoln Town Car.  The older Town Car had paste wax, albeit, not applied recently.  I have to admit, I've never seen water be repelled from the car surface like it did from this IBIZ product.  The two cars, side by side, in the rain, really showed the difference.  I've scheduled a second coat of wax next Monday before we leave for our month at the beach on Wednesday.  Never having recovered from the replacement of my left hip, going on 85 years of age notwithstanding, I have trouble working on the bottom of the car and Donna, my girl Friday, is going to help me.

What a dirty word.  The word "SCRATCH" and my golden Town Car does not even belong in the same blog!  Although the car is actually 10 years old, two sons gave it to their elderly mother, who never liked it--it was too big--and hardly drove it at all, never in the winter time.

THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY
Click for full color
I've just read an article on the 26 most scenic drives.  I have driven all except one in Alaska and one in Puerto Rico.  A nurse friend bemoaned that she couldn't afford to go to the beach.  Her children are grown, her husband has a good job.  How very sad!  Just plan what you want to do, set a date, save the costs, and do whatever.

THERE IS NONE SO BLIND AS THOSE WHO WILL NOT LISTEN - Neil Gaiman

NORTH SHORE LAKE SUPERIOR
Route 161 along the north shore of Lake Superior.  I not only recall this exact spot, I remember when they built this bridge to eliminate a dangerous curve.  About a sixteen hour drive from home, I have been over it at least two dozen times.  I go about two hours further east and turn north on a gravel road until the road ends, put the canoe in the water and start paddling.  Anyone who is interested can do this with planning.

SETTING GOALS IS THE FIRST STEP IN TURNING THE INVISIBLE INTO THE VISIBLE - Tony Robbins

MONTANA
I would think everyone would enjoy this beautiful drive on the northern edge of Yellowstone National Park.  I have been there many times.  Among the many fond memories is the celebration of my daughter, Kimberly's, seventh birthday.  Although we had brought her present, a watch, from home, we needed a birthday cake.  Not able to find one in this isolated area, we used a large doughnut with a candle, which turned out to be a better memory.  It is a long drive from Ohio but it only requires time and planning to enjoy what truly is an amazing drive.

A GOOD PLAN VIOLENTLY EXECUTED NOW IS BETTER THAN A PERFECT PLAN EXECUTED NEXT WEEK - George S. Patton

WASHINGTON STATE
This most beautiful drive is on the west side of the mountain range.  On the eastern side of Washington, it is all dessert.  My last trip to Seattle was by air on the way home from Maui.  Although I had been in the area many, many times, my wife, Julie had not.  We toured the country for three months once but it was the year Mt. St. Helens blew her top and the Northwest was closed.  From Ohio this is a multi day drive but so worth the effort.

THE SECRET OF GETTING AHEAD IS GETTING STARTED - Mark Twain

MASSACHUSETTS SHORE LINE
This picture does not do this north eastern state justice.  My wife and I visited it in 1990.  We drove to Portland, Maine, took a motel room and did day drives throughout the area.  Arcadia National Park was beautiful.  We also visited the L. L. Bean store a number of times, once at 3:oo AM.  What fond memories, including lobster sandwiches at MacDonalds.

THE CANYON LANDS OF UTAH

Bryce Canyon and all the canyon lands of Utah, are beyond belief.  From there on down into the Painted Dessert of Arizona, our country is unique.  See this with the Grand Canyon National Park, another wonder of the world.  Do not miss out on such experiences.  I haven't.
