WALT AND KIMBERLY
82nd Birthday
When I turned 70 I told my doctor that "I had 25 years of active plans and that I'd need another 5 years to wind down, could he handle that?".  He assured me that he could if I could.  Physically, he headed my life in a direction to let me live to be a hundred.  He told me to lose weight.  I did.  He declared me a type 2 diabetic although my sugar was in the safe zone.  Among many other things, he started to examine me every three months instead of twice year.  He assured me that sooner or later something would catch up with me and the sooner he started to defend me against it the better my chances.

WE GET TOO SOON OLD AND TOO LATE SMART

I JOINED THE NAVY AND SAW THE WORLD
Before I was a teenager, I knew what I wanted to do in life.  I wanted to join the Navy.  But, not just join the Navy, I wanted to be the ship's radioman.  I was too young for WWII, which bothered me to no end.  When I graduated from high school, I wanted to go right into the Navy but my parents had to sign for me, at age 17, and wouldn't.  So, I quit my new job as a timekeeper, went back to West Virginia  and began to live a very rowdy life.  They changed their minds.  The Navy agreed to send me to their Class A Radio School and  on July 22nd, 1948 I was off to boot camp.

ITS OLD AGE WHEN THE CANDLES COST MORE THAN THE CAKE - Bob Hope

For most of my 4 years, nine months and 17 days I was the radioman on the USS YUMA ATF94, a seagoing tug.  I loved the old Yuma!  She was a feeder. I was every where in the Pacific, to and from Hawaii many times, to all the major island groups, to Japan and the Philippines, the East and South China Sea.  I was in the Korea war zone when that fight started.  I've crossed the Panama Canal once, the Atlantic six times

THE SEIBERLING TIRE AND RUBBER CO.
Out of the navy with a two year college degree in Industrial Management, I was  employed for 27 years at the Seiberling Rubber Co.  The last 8 years I had the top job in a tire plant, Manager of Tire Production.  During these years I dedicated my life to my children, crossing and recrossing the country with them many times.  All three are college graduates with master degrees, professionals married to professionals.

WALT AND NIECE LA TONYA
65th and 35th H.S.Reunion
I like to dance and have taught ball room dancing.  I call square dances.  I have played the banjo and the wash tub bass in a jug band that was televised several times.  I have been on GOOD MORNING, AMERICA twice.  I have been published.  I have been down the Ohio River three times.  I have made dozens of wilderness canoe expeditions to Canada and to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, I have back packed the Appalachian Trail and the west coast of Ireland, I have been to all of the states except Alaska and it is on my bucket list, I have traveled extensively throughout Europe, I have spent the last 25 Octobers in a pent house suite in Myrtle Beach.

In short, I HAVE BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT.

ON MY O'DAY MARINER
I Plan To Sail Into Life's Sunset
I am now preparing to sail the 6,000 mile loop around the eastern United States in a small sail boat.  When the doctor told Julie that I HAD A 30 YEAR OLD HEAD ON AN 84 YEAR OLD BODY, she reminded him of what he already knew, I live an adventurous life.  While I can no longer back pack mountain peaks or run 5K races, with my replaced hip, I can still sail a small sail boat.  Although the doctor inquired extensively about this cruise, he never once tried to discourage me.  GOOD OR BAD, YOU DECIDE!

SITE OF ORIGINAL OKTOBERFEST, MUNICH
Oh, Yes!  Julie and I were to the 175th Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany.  We plan to return in the near future with my daughter, Kimberly.  We will also visit the site of the movie "The Sound of Music"  in Salzburg, Austria and go for a waltz in Vienna.  This will be our third visit to the German and Austrian Alps.

So much to do, so little time!

GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS
