GOD GRANT ME THE SERENITY TO ACCEPT THE THING I CANNOT CHANGE, THE COURAGE TO CHANGE THE THINGS I CAN, AND THE WISDOM TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE  Reinhold Niehubr

CHANGE IS THE LAW OF LIFE, AND THOSE WHO LOOK ONLY TO THE PAST OR PRESENT ARE CERTAIN TO MISS THE FUTURE - John F. Kennedy

It requires no thought to know that I have changed.  I am no longer young and athletic.  Still, I think young and athletic.  My wife Julie has cut my hair for nearly 40 years.  I used to tell her "Don't cut the black hair".  She has got better.  Today she only cuts white hair.

TO IMPROVE IS TO CHANGE: TO BE PERFECT IS TO CHANGE A LOT - Churchill

I  certainly do not mind changing from a 2-man cross cut saw, cutting fire wood, to today's central heat, to say nothing of air conditioning in today's heat wave.  When I was a youngster we only had a fireplace in the "front" room.  Except for a few feet from the fire place, the house was like ice.

ALL GREAT CHANGES IN AMERICA BEGINS AT THE DINNER TABLE - Ronald Reagan

What a great change to indoor plumbing.   At one time my family carried water from a spring then Dad dug a cistern.

There was the old "two hole" out house that was hot and smelly and full of spiders in the summer time and ice covered in the winter time.  No, No!  We did have a choice of toilet paper.  Uh, no, not quilted or plain.  Either the Sears or the Montgomery Ward catalog.  Soft?  Sure!  Wad it up all you wanted.   Slop jars?  Don't even go there!

WHEN YOU ARE THROUGH CHANGING, YOU ARE THROUGH - Bob Dylan

U.S. ROUTE 21
In West Virginia you had to know your "Three R's".  Uh, that's "Read'n, Rite'n and Route 21".  Yep,  you had to know Route 21.  Eisenhower's change to the interstate highway system started when I was 44 years of age.

Today you can easily drive from my home in northeast Ohio to my home town in West Virginia in three - three and a half hours.  In the 1940's it was a very difficult 8 hour drive on crooked Rt. 21.

Not having a car, Dad rode the train, which is how I first came to Barberton, Ohio.  It took ten hours by train.

COULD WE CHANGE OUR ATTITUDE, WE SHOULD NOT ONLY SEE LIFE DIFFERENTLY, BUT LIFE ITSELF WOULD COME TO BE DIFFERENT - Katherine Mansfield

Walking from room to room today I take my cell phone with me.  Text short messages or to send emails,  I use it to take the pictures you see on my blog.  We never had a phone when I was a youngster.  Mom and Dad got a phone while I was in the Navy.  Today, every child has a cell phone.

IGNORANCE IS ALWAYS AFRAID OF CHANGE - Jawahalal Nehru

1951 and home from three years in the Pacific, America had television.  Bought the first colored TV when my children were young and put it in the music room.  Today, we have a large television in every room in the house except the dining room and bath room.  I only watch the news at 6:00AM and 6:00PM and the O'Reilly Factor at 8:00PM.  Of course I watch football.  Go Bucks!

ONLY THE WISEST AND THE STUPIDEST OF MEN NEVER CHANGE - Confucius

SO MUCH CHANGE!  YET, I AM THE SAME PERSON THAT I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN

WE DON'T HAVE A TRILLION DOLLAR DEBT BECAUSE WE HAVEN'T TAXED ENOUGH; WE HAVE A TRILLION DOLLAR DEBT BECAUSE WE SPEND TOO MUCH - Ronald Reagan

WE MUST NOT LET OUR LEADERS LOAD US UP WITH NATIONAL DEBT - Jefferson

The greatest threat facing America today is the disastrous fiscal policies of our own government, marked by shameless deficient spending and Federal Reserve currency devaluation.

It is this one-two punch--Congress spending more than it can tax or borrow, and the feds printing money to make the difference--that threatens to impoverish us by further destroying the value of our nation - Dr. Ron
Paul

TOO MANY PEOPLE SPEND MONEY THEY HAVEN'T EARNED, TO BUY THINGS THEY DON'T WANT, TO IMPRESS PEOPLE THEY DON't LIKE - Will Smith

REAGAN EXPLAINING TAX REDUCTION
THE RIGHT MAN CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN OUR NATIONAL DEBT  J. C. Watts said "Consider in Washington, around the country today, we are talking about balanced budgets, paying down the national debt, getting the economy going, defending ourselves.

Newt Gingrich did all those things when he was Speaker.  We got tax relief.  We balanced the budgets.  We got, you know, job creation.  We paid down the national debt."

A BILLION HERE, A BILLION THERE, SOONER OR LATER IT ADDS UP TO REAL MONEY - Everertt Dirksen

BUSH 43 AT 9/11 SITE
IDLE PROMISES JUST WON'T HACK IT!
George W. Bush at a radio address in February 24, 2001 said "My plan reduces the national debt, and fast!  So fast, in fact, the economists worry that we're going to run out of debt to retire".

Granted, after he made that statement he was faced with an unexpected 9/11 and two wars.  Although he is a "piker" compared to Obama, he still ran up the national debt by $10 Trillion.

THE NATIONAL DEBT HAS BEEN GROWING AT A FASTER PACE THAN THE GDP AND SOME EXPERTS SAY THE DEBT BURDEN COULD PUSH THE COUNTRY TOWARD INSOLVENCY

PRESIDENT RUTHERFORD B HAYES
Rutherford B. Hayes was the 19th U. S. President.  When asked to run for President, he said he would serve for only one term.  He refused to run for a second term.  How refreshing that is, huh?  He was my great grandfather's Commander in the American Civil War.  He said, "Let every man, every corporation, and especially let every village, town and city, every county and state, get out of debt and keep out of debt.  It is the debtor that is ruined by hard times".

HE WHO WILL NOT ECONOMIZE WILL HAVE TO AGONIZE - Confucius

THE ROAD TO RECOVERY IS TO STIMULATE SMALL BUSINESSES AND INNOVATION BY REDUCING TAXATION, REGULATION AND LITIGATION - Sandy Adams

EVERYTHING I HAVE, MY CAREER, MY SUCCESS, MY FAMILY I OWE TO AMERICA - Arnold Schwarzenegger

SMALL BUSINESS TREND IN AMERICA
America is increasingly dominated by large corporations, the Walmart, the McDonalds.  It isn't clear how much longer this trend will continue.  AMERICA IS THE LOSER! We may or may not gain monetarily in the long run, that remains to be seen.  We are losing out in quality and personal service.

BUSINESS OWNERS SHOULD NOT HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN THEIR FAITH AND VIOLATION OF THE LAW - John Greenleaf Whittier

BETTY TOMASO, OWNER
Betty Tamaso and her family opened an Italian restaurant 42 years ago.  From all appearances, their business continues to grow.  The Tamaso's are a good family.  Our daughters went to high school together.  Betty is not a sit in the office and check the receipts kind of gal, she gets out and talks to the people.  If anything is not to their satisfaction, she makes it right in a hurry.

A year ago my wife and I chose Tamaso's for our dining group.  Everyone was thrilled.  We ate in a private room that just held one large table for twelve people, just right for six couples.  We met Missy the waitress that night.  She had a huge abrasion on her chin from an automobile accident.  It did not interfer with her providing first class service.  She still serves Julie and I.

SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS ARE FIGHTING EVERY DAY TO CREATE AND INNOVATE, BUT CONTINUE TO FACE GOVERNMENT BARRIERS TO JOB CREATION - Peter Roskam

Julie couldn't decide between two kinds of wine.  Missy brought her a sample of the unknown wine, a large sample.  Julie took a sip then ordred it.  I asked if I could taste the wine and Julie said okay.  Hey, how was I to know there was more than one taste left in the glass?

We decided to split a small anti pasta salad.  Uh, check out that salad.  THAT'S A SMALL?  We could not eat it all.  We did eat a bit of garlic bread with it but, that was a big salad for two.  Again, Julie couldn't decide if she wanted blue cheese or Italian dressing.  Missy brought both.

The salad was good but we decided to go back to the regular salad next time.  A shame to waste what we couldn't eat.

AND WHAT PEOPLE DON'T UNDERSTAND IS THAT THE BULK OF BUSINESS IN THIS COUNTRY IS SMALL BUSINESS - Alphonso Jackson

LASAGNA WITH MEAT BALLS
I ordered Veal Parmesan with spaghetti.  Julie ordered Lasagna with meat balls.  The meat balls are beyond description.   Over the meal is a layer of melted cheese.  The top platter is too hot to touch and the food must be cooled somewhat before eating.  We each ate half and took the rest for dinner tomorrow.

I'M SERIOUS WHEN I DO MY WORK. I'M NOT SERIOUS WHEN I'M HOME WITH MY KIDS - Bill Gates

We were treated special tonight, and we appreciate it.  Normally, they give you a very small amount of sherbet after dinner.  Tonight they gave us two beautiful chocolate cannoli.  I enjoyed mine but Julie is not a chocolate person.

Who is a big time chocolate person is our housekeeper, Donna.  She is in for a treat tomorrow.  When I see this dessert I always think of the TV show, "I Love Raymond" and of Marie.

IF LEADERSHIP IS THE WAY FORWARD, VISION IS THE WALKING STICK - Nkem Paul

THE THOMAS FAMILY
I usually judge a church by how many people stand around and talk after the service is over.  The attitude of the THOMAS FAMILY was similar as they stood around in the parking lot and chatted after dinner, not wanting to part.

When I asked permission to include them in my blog, the spokesperson, (there is always a spokes person in every family), asked if my blog was risque.  I chuckled and assured her she would have all her clothes on in my blog.  They were good sports!

The news is so bad that sometimes we think that America is all going down hill.  As I watched a couple, with their mother, bow, pray and cross themselves before eating tonight, I felt reassured all will work out well.

AS A SMALL BUSINESSPERSON, YOU HAVE NO GREATER LEVERAGE THAN THE TRUTH - John Greenleaf Whittier

MAY GOD BLESS THE THOMAS FAMILY

Since Obama took office the national debt has jumped from $10.6 trillion to $18 trillion.  That works out to be $65,443 for every American house hold and $70,985 for every full time American worker.

I have no personal debt but through my government I owe $65,443.

GROWTH IN WELFARE DOLLARS
According to the Census Bureau, in 2013 there were 105,862,000 full time American workers, including a whopping 16,685,000 full time government workers.  At the same time, there were 109,631,000 getting welfare benefits.  There are more on welfare than there are full time workers.

GROWTH IN FOOD STAMPS
THINK OF THIS!  There are thirty million more on food stamps than there were just 10 years ago.

Warren Buffett said that both parties should declare a debt limit.  He said it was silly to have a country with 237 years building it's reputation to have people tear it down.

THOMAS JEFFERSON SAID "DEMOCRACY WILL CEASE TO EXIST WHEN PEOPLE REALIZE THEY CAN VOTE THEMSELVES MORE MONEY"

Why did America reelect Obama to a second term after such a dismal first term?  Why did America reelect Bill Clinton after it was proven that he lied to the American public, was impeached for perjury and obstruction of justice, losing his law license?  Why is Hillary Clinton being considered for president after her lies regarding Benghazi, lying about her personal server and lying about using the services of Sydney Blumenthal, paying Blumenthal from the Clinton Foundation because the president forbid her to use his services?

BECAUSE PEOPLE HAVE REALIZED THAT THEY CAN VOTE THEMSELVES MONEY AND CARE LESS ABOUT THEIR COUNTRY

TU-ENDIE-WEI STATE PARK
Site Of The Battle Of Point Pleasant
Point Pleasant, WV is my home town, the place where I was born and raised.  The seat of Mason County, it was once a thriving community but today the down town probably has as many business closed as open.  Like the rest of the state, the population is on the decline, down 6.1% since 2000.  The 2014 population was 4,359.

ONE THING ABOUT LIVING IN A SMALL TOWN, I KNOW EVERYBODY AND EVERYBODY KNOWS ME - Anna Smith

CAMPBELL'S CREEK, WV
The small community of Campbell's Creek, WV has a Methodist Church, a gas station and a few stores.  The few famlies there go back for several generations.  Simon Kenton had a hunting camp at Campbell's creek when it was all a wilderness.  The  Indians broke into his camp and killed one companion.

Kenton and his other companion ran bare foot and naked 46 miles in the snow and ice to Point Pleasant where they were rescued.  Today the area is crime ridden and almost as  dangerous as when Kenton camped there.

I HAVE LIVED MOST OF MY LIFE IN A SMALL TOWN AND I'M IN THE HABIT OF KNOWING AND TALKING TO EVERYONE - Ellen Gilchrist

An entire blog, or two, could be written about Wall, South Dakota.  It was a highlight of my and Julie's three month trip around America in 1981.

In 1931, Ted Hustead had graduated from Pharmacy School and had been working at different drug stores.  From a $3,000 legacy from his father, he went looking for a drug store to buy and found one in a small prairie town of Wall, SD.  With his wife, Dorothy--a high school teacher--and young son they made their home behind a blanket stretched across the store.

PEOPLE IN A SMALL TOWN, MUCH MORE THAN IN BIG CITIES, SHARE A DESTINY - Richard Russa

Wall was made up of only 326, mostly farmers wiped out by the depression and a drought and in five years there was no growth in the store.  Then, they got a great idea.  They had a deep well with cold water.  On a major east west highway, people were offered FREE ICE WATER..  From that day forward they have been swamped.

A SMALL TOWN IS A PLACE WHERE THERE IS NO PLACE TO GO WHERE YOU SHOULDN'T - Burt Bacharack

Today you can get anything at Wall Drug store, from furnishing your home to exploring the Nile.  See a dinosaur or ride a "jackalope", it's all there.  You will see WALL DRUG STORE signs around the world--I'm looking at one in my office.  Yes, you can get a prescription filled.

Wall Drug gives away 20,000 cups of water a day.  Coffee is a nickle, free with donuts for a lot of people, from honeymooners to veterans.  They have barracks to house the college students that live and work there in the summer time.  They take in $10 million dollars a year from two million visitors.  A REAL SUCCESS STORY FOR A SMALL TOWN.

I'M A NATIVE WEST VIRGINIAN AND I'VE BEEN CALLED EVERYTHING FROM A HILLBILLY TO A STUMP JUMPER.  I'M ALWAYS PROUD OF IT.  I'M VERY PROUD TO BE A WEST VIRGINIAN - John Raese

YOU HAVE TO HAVE SMELT A LOT OF MULE MANURE BEFORE YOU CAN SING LIKE A HILLBILLY - Hank Williams

PREHISTORIC INDIAN BURIAL MOUND

West Virginia is a very old country.  Burial mounds from prehistoric man are scattered throughout the state, especially in Moundsville, Charleston and Romney.  A 2010 analysis revealed that native Americans were burning forest to clear land to grow tobacco, maise (corn), gourds and squash as early as 100BC.

DEEP DOWN, I'M JUST A WEST VIRGINIA HILL BILLY - Brad Paisley

IROQUOIS INDIAN

In the 1670's the IROQUOIS Indians drove the other Indian tribes out of the West Virginia region, including the game rich, broad river valleys.  Deadly war existed between the Indian and the white man until the Battle Of Point Pleasant, on October 10, 1774 with the white man winning and continued on into the three sevens war, 1777.  In 1939 the U. S. Congress decreed, incorrectly, that the Battle of Point Pleasant was the first battle of the American Revolutionary War .

IN WEST VIRGINIA, THE MOST VULNERABLE PEOPLE WE HAVE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO GET UP EVERY MORNING AND GO TO WORK - Joe Manchin

Originally Virginia, the two different parts of the state varied greatly.  Independant minded mountain folk settled in the west while in the east the society was entrenched aristocratic, slave holders.  The mountaineers unsuccessfully tried to form a separate state in 1769.  When Virginia seceded from the union and joined the Confederacy in the Civil War, the mountaineers were divided about 50-50 with 25,000 fighting for the north and 25,000 fighting for the south.  (My great grand father, Indivan Pierce, volunteered for the north).  At the Wheeling Convention in 1861, delegates again asked to be separated from Virginia and on June 20th, 1863 West Virginia became the 35th state, which was first called Kanawha.

MAY YOUR GLASS ALWAYS BE FULL, MAY THERE ALWAYS BE A ROOF OVER YOUR HEAD, AND MAY YOU DIRTY SINNERS BE IN HEAVEN A HALF HOUR BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD - Jason Jack Miller

WEST VIRGINIA TODAY

Of the 50 states today, West Virginia is 41st in area and 38th in population and is classified as part of the south.  With only 1% foreign born, West Virginia is the lowest and only 2.7% speak a foreign language in the home.  The population has declined from a high of 2,005,552 in 1950 to only 1,890,326 in 2014.  West Virginia is the only state today where the death rate exceeds the birth rate.

Sixty percent more people are moving out of the state than moving in.  The states education system ranks 47th out of 50 and Charleston leads the nation in divorces.

I GET ALONG WITH ALL THE WOMEN SINGERS, BUT ESPECIALLY DOLLY PARTON.  WE TALK THE SAME HILLBILLY LANGUAGE - Loretta Lynn

WE WILL LOOK FOR YOU, WE WILL FIND YOU, WE WILL KILL YOU M. Robio

ROUGH RIDERS CHARGING SAN JUAN HILL
In 1898, the U. S. Navy and Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders  took GITMO  in the war between the United States and Spain.  In the Treaty of 1913 the United States agreed to pay  Cuba for the PERPETUAL use of GITMO.

THE WAR ON TERRORISM MUST BE WAGED AT EVERY LEVEL, WITH EVERY TOOL OR STATECRAFT, FOR AS LONG AS IT TAKES Colin Powell

TERRORISTS TRADED FOR BERGDAHL
Of the 779 bomb makers and suicide bombers once held in GITO, 116 remain.  A hundred and four released are confirmed to have returned to terrorism, another 74 suspected.  Five detained terrorists were traded for captured Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.  They received hugs and kisses when they landed in Qatar and will without doubt return to acts of terrorism.

WE CAN'T BE POLITICALLY CORRECT-RIGHT OR LEFT-IN THE WAR ON TERRORISM. PERIOD - Malala Yousafzi

GITMO DETAINEES PLAYING VOLLYBALL
The 5,500 troops stationed at GITMO work long hours under intense and sometimes dangerous conditions.  No cell phones, no liberty, and spit, polish and salute duty.  The detainees, however, have never had it so good, clean clothes, good shelter and plentiful food.

TERRORISM HAS BECOME THE SYSTEMATIC WEAPON OF A WAR THAT KNOWS NO BORDERS AND SELDOM HAS A FACE - Jacques Ciroc

Obama has pledged to shut down GITMO.   In 2009 the Democratic controlled Senate voted to block funds to close it.  Obama says he is again ready to close GITMO but it now has to be funded by a Republican Senate.

TERRORISM HAS NO NATIONALITY OR RELIGION Viadimir Putin

THE OBAMA'S IN AFRICA
You will soon be hearing President Obama moaning about the "cost" of GITMO.   He is now in Kenya, Africa taking a hundred guests with him, along with probably three times that many security people costing millions.  He pledged to GIVE $1 Billion of YOUR tax dollars to Kenya. In 1998 the American Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya was bombed, but, what the heck, after all, this is the land of his fathers.

Jillian Johnson was a business woman in Lafayette, La.  Twenty minutes into watching a movie, "Train Wreck" she was gunned down by 59-year-old John Russel Houser, who later shot himself.  She and another were killed and nine were wounded.  In San Francisco, recently, 32-year-old Kate Steinle was also gunned down while walking in a tourist area with her father.  Five service men were just murdered in Chatanoogy, TN while sitting at their desks.  In Chicago this year there has been 1,493 shooting victims.

There have been shootings in Des Moines, Iowa, Marysville, WA, Columbia, SC, and Bloomington, IL.  There is no safe haven in America.    BUT, THERE NEVER HAS BEEN!

I have been aboard a replica of the Mayflower.  I have sailed across the Atlantic six times.  I cannot imagine doing that in the Mayflower.  In 1620, however, 102 Pilgrims did just that taking two months to cross from England.  While two died on the way, that was just a precusor of what was to come.  Half the Pilgrims died the first winter.

WAGON TRAIN ON OREGON TRAIL
Starting before dawn in 1836, with a meager breakfast, the wagon trains on the Oregon Trail would plod along for 15 miles, circling the wagons around 5:00 PM.  From indian massacres, drownings, snake bites, lightning, and injuries from domestic animals, 1 in 10 would die, 65,000 deaths in ten years.

PEACE CANNOT BE KEPT BY FORCE; IT CAN ONLY BE ACHIEVED BY UNDERSTANDING Albert Einstein

Granny is right, "They's wantin' our guns!" Every time there is a shooting, the left wing media will start shouting "GUN CONTROL".  Never mind that Chicago, the murder capitol, has very strict gun control.  I'm with Jed, they ain't a git'n my guns.  They are "locked and loaded" and near at hand.  Unless you read it on this blog, you will hear nothing of the young  white mother who fled to her bedroom with her baby and called the police as two black thugs broke into her home.  The police dispatcher told her to do whatever she needed to do to save her baby.  She did!  She shot them with a shotgun.  You won't read that.
