GO SET A WATCHMAN BY HARPER LEE: Really, by Harper Lee?

IT TAKES STRENGTH AND COURAGE TO ADMIT THE TRUTH - Rick Riordan

Thanks to my grand daughter, Jenny, I have just finished reading Harper Lee's recently released book "Go Set A Watchman".  Jenny bought the book for the family Kindle library where we may all read it for free.   This book is a sequel to Lee's first book, "To Kill A Mockingbird".

OH WHAT TANGLED WEBS WE WEAVE WHEN FIRST WE PRACTICE TO DECEIVE - Sir Walter Scott

SCOUT, ATTICUS, JEM
The first book told the story of a widower, Atticus Finch, an attorney in Alabama, raising his two children, Scout and Jem with the help of a black cook.  Scout is an out-and-out tom boy and, with the help of her brother, Jem, a neighbor boy, Henry, and a summer friend, Dill, she went from one entanglement to another.  Atticus was totally involved with the children treating them more like adults than kids.

THE TRUTH WILL NOT SET YOU FREE, BUT USED CAREFULLY, IT CAN CONFUSE THE HELL OUT OF YOUR ENEMIES - Laurell K. Hamilton

THE TRIAL SCENE FROM THE MOVIE
"Mockingbird" was made into an iconic movie following the Supreme Court ruling that  segregation was unconstitutional.  Finch, an anti-racist attorney defended an innocent young black man charged with the rape of a white woman.  Reflecting racial stress in America at the time, in the book the National Guard had to be called out to keep the peace.

HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY - William Shakespeare

HARPER LEE
"Go Set A Watchman" was just published July 14th and since Harper Lee, 88,  suffered a stroke in 2007 and has been blind, deaf, confined to a wheel chair and suffering dementia, CLEARLY, SHE HASN'T JUST WRITTEN THIS BOOK!  The manuscript supposedly was just "found" attached to a typewritten copy of her first book.

IF YOU TELL THE TRUTH YOU DON'T HAVE TO REMEMBER ANYTHING - Mark Twain

DID HARPER LEE WRITE EITHER BOOK?  It has always been rumored that Truman Capote, 1924-1984, author, screenwriter, playwright and actor with over 20 films and TV dramas of his work, actually wrote the first book and allowed his friend Harper Lee to claim it.  It has been 55 years now and she never wrote another book.  Their friendship ended over Lee winning a Pulitizer Prize for the first book, something Capote had failed to do.

HONESTY IS A VERY EXPENSIVE GIFT, DON'T EXPECT IT FROM CHEAP PEOPLE - Warren Buffet

HOW DID I LIKE THE BOOK?   On a scale of 1 - 10, with 10 being the best and 1 being the worse, the last book was a 5 only because of frequent mentions of episodes in the first book.  In the last book, which it is claimed to have been written first--which just wouldn't make sense story-wise--Scout is now an adult home from New York.  Atticus is now a virulent racist and in the Klan.  There are boring, pages-long dialogues of white people's positions on treating black people as equals, when it is clear, that the poor, uneducated local blacks were not equal, through no fault of their own.

Very interesting! I had never heard that rumor of Truman Capote writing that book before. Somehow it makes sense though. You raised a big question: why did Harper Lee not write a book in all those years? Glad to read your review of the new book.
