PHILADELPHIA: Is There Any Brotherly Love?

TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD, WE GROW OLD.  BUT, NOT TO BROTHERS AND SISTERS.  WE KNOW EACH OTHER AS WE ALWAYS WERE.  WE KNOW EACH OTHERS FAULTS.  WE SHARE PRIVATE FAMILY JOKES.  WE REMEMBER FAMILY FEUDS AND SECRETS, FAMILY GRIEFS AND JOYS.  WE LIVE OUTSIDE THE TOUCH OF TIME.

THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA'S NAME ROUGHLY TRANSLATES TO "BROTHERLY LOVE" FROM THE GREEK

I am reading this book on my Kindle.  New books cost a bit more and I paid $12.99 for it.  I'm not sure it was worth the money.  The book paints a bleak picture of crime and politics in Philadelphia.  For my 70th birthday, my three children treated me, taking me to the Army-Navy game in Philadelphia. It was the last game Navy lost to Army.  Driving quickly to and from our hotel, I didn't get to see much of Philadelphia.   As often happens, the books I read lead me to study the setting of the book.  What I learned about Philadelphia was not all that good!

WE HAVE FLOWN THE AIR LIKE BIRDS AND SWUM THE SEA LIKE FISHES, BUT WE HAVE YET TO LEARN THE SIMPLE ACT OF WALKING THE EARTH LIKE BROTHERS - Martin Luther king, Jr.

In 1683, William Penn exchanged promises of perpetual friendship with Delaware Indian Chief, Tammany   Penn's treaty was founded on the Quaker principals of equality, integrity and peace.  Tammany bestowed a wampum belt to seal their chain of friendship.  The whites and Indians may have got along but future residents have not.

THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA'S NAME TRANSLATES TO "BROTHERLY LOVE" IN GREEK

Penn founded Philadelphia, the 5th largest city in America, to be the capitol of the Colony.  The Declaration of Independence and the U. S. Constitution were signed there by 55 educated and highly intelligent men but written to be understood by people of limited education and modest intelligence.

HE AIN'T HEAVY, HE'S MY BROTHER - Neil Diamond

PHILADELPHIA, CITY OF BROTHERLY LOVE

Philadelphia became a major industrial center and railroad hub that grew from an influx of European immigrants and became a prime destination for freed African Slaves.  Today the city is 43.6% African American, 36.9 White, heavily Irish, 12.3% Hispanic and 6.3% Asian.  The city has endured decades of heavy crime, civil rights protests and riots.  A program referred to as Gentrification has reduced the 525 murders in 1990 to 392 in 2014.

WHEN YOU ARE CONFRONTED WITH AN OPPONENT, CONQUER HIM WITH LOVE - Mahatma Gandhi

Camden, NJ, just across the river from Philadelphia, is the most dangerous city in America.  Philadelphia's other neighboring Mid-Atlantic cities, Baltimore and Washington, DC rank as the 2nd and 3rd most dangerous cities.  Do you suppose that if we threw in a few hand fulls of beads, we could trade this area back to the Indians?  Yes, they might call us "Indian Givers", but, what the heck, the country doesn't need the problems that exist in this area.  Maybe we could make Charleston, WV the nation's capitol?  NAH!  Wouldn't do that to those good people.

MYRTLE BEACH: What Do We Do For A Whole Month?

THE GOOD LIFE   THE GOOD LIFE   THE GOOD LIFE   THE GOOD LIFE

PLANET EARTH HAS FIVE GREAT OCEANS AND 113 SEAS.  THEY REPRESENT 73% OF THE SURFACE OF THE GLOBE, AND TOGETHER THEY'VE BEEN AN ENDLESS SOURCE OF INSPIRATION FOR MANKIND

THE VOICE OF THE SEA SPEAKS TO THE SOUL.  THE TOUCH OF THE SEA IS SENSUOUS, ENFOLDING THE BODY IN ITS SOFT, CLOSE EMBRACE - Kate Chopin

BEACH FROM OUR PENT HOUSE SUITE
Julie and I leave in 30 days for our 26th October at Myrtle Beach.  We lease a beautiful and roomy pent house suite for which a key is required just to ride the elevator to our floor.  We have different family and friends as our guests from week to week, but what do we do for a whole month?  Well, we eat, and eat and eat.

OUR MEMORIES OF THE OCEAN WILL LINGER ON, LONG AFTER OUR FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND ARE GONE

Our very favorite place to eat is a "hole in the wall" called Flo's Place.  They made major improvements a few years ago but I liked it better when it was shabby. They are located right on an inlet in Murrells Inlet.  They serve "New Orlean's flavor 'Cajun' cooking.  We always eat the same thing, oyster poboys and their fried dill pickles.  Finger licking good!

THE SEA!  THE SEA!  THE OPEN SEA!  THE BLUE, THE FRESH, THE EVER FREE - Bryan W. Procter

VILLA ROMANA ITALIAN
A wonderful new Italian restaurant my son and daughter-in-law discovered last year was the Villa Romana Italian.  It has the atmosphere of a fine restaurant with the down home playing of a cordial accordion player who takes requests.  The food is varied and could not be more delicious:  Rack of lamb, shrimp fettiocine, chicken alla Romana, Blackened grouper, Pork ossobuco, Stuffed flounder, on and on and on.  Wine by the bottle and a personal server.  Prices not bad, either.  We ate there three times last year, will probably eat there four times this year.

THERE IS NOTHING MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN THE WAY THE OCEAN REFUSES TO STOP KISSING THE SHORELINE, NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES IT'S SENT AWAY - S.Kay

The one restaurant where we have eaten every year, for 25 years, without fail,  is Crabby Mikes Calabash Seafood.  And, the prices haven't gone up too much, it was $25 per person and now is only $29 per person.  Regardless of when you go there will be a 45 minute wait, just plan on it.  THE ATMOSPHERE IS WILD.  Inside and outside.  There is a big crab eating a van in the parking lot.  We also eat at Bubba's Fish Shack, Captain George's, Drunken Jack's and elsewhere.  Oh, yes, wouldn't want to miss hot dogs at Johnny Rockets.  We also cook, our best time is "finger food" night.

I LOOK MY BEST WHEN I'M TOTALLY FREE, ON HOLIDAY, WALKING THE BEACH - Rosamund Pike

MT. ALANTICUS GOLF COURSE
WE PLAY MINI GOLF. No, no we don't just eat.  We also play a very competitive game of mini golf at several golf courses but without fail at the Mt. Alanticius Course.  You play 18 holes of mini golf climbing up an "active" volcano.  The last few holes are played in grass shacks.  You can, and I do, ride the elevator back down to the 19th hole.  Yes, the 19th hole.  It has maybe a 20 foot fairway, less than a foot wide, into a pool.  make a "hole in one",  you play free for life.

"SAFE HARBOR" IS A STATE OF MIND, IT'S THE PLACE, IN REALITY A METAPHOR, TO WHICH ONE GOES IN TIME OF TROUBLE AND WORRY, THE BEACH.

CAROLINA OPERA
WE GO TO SHOWS!  There are a lot of shows, but I have only gone to the CAROLINA OPERA, and Dolly Parton's previous country show.  There is music, dance and lighting beyond belief.  What I like most is the comedy.  I laughed so hard my sides hurt.  My friend, Don Wilson, said he couldn't breath for laughing so hard.  We'll take in at least a couple of these shows.

THE WALT PIERCE FAMILY
WHAT IS THE GOOD LIFE?  I am sure it is different things for different people.  In addition to being warm, dry and well fed, the very best of living the good life is when I'm with my family.  I have been with family and/or communicated with family today.  I have made plans to be with family in the future.  Today has been a day of the good life for me.

ONE OUGHT, EVERY DAY AT LEAST, TO HEAR A LITTLE SONG, READ A GOOD POEM, SEE A FINE PICTURE, AND, IF IT WERE POSSIBLE, TO SPEAK A FEW REASONABLE WORDS - Johann Wolfgang

WALT & JULIE
I SHARED WITH FAMILY TODAY.  I started the day preparing a 6:00 AM breakfast for my wife Julie.  I took some zucchini squash and tomatoes to my daughter Kimberly.  We texted one another.  I visited with Chris, a handy man who was painting our deck.  I visited with Donna, our house keeper and saw a new suit she had bought.  I wrote a blog.  I cared for our Giant Schnauzer, Gunner, who is having some problems with medicine the vet gave him.  Julie cut my hair.  I recorded the results of several high school foot ball games I follow each season.  I had pizza this evening in the home of Julie's granddaughter and saw her new grandson, Jase.  I read my Kindle.

WHEN LIFE SHOWS YOU A HUNDRED REASON TO CRY, SHOW IT A THOUSAND REASONS TO SMILE

WHAT WILL THE FUTURE HOLD?  I started plans to have the children home  for a football game, followed with chili.  We leave for our month at the beach in four weeks.  Julie told me to start getting my clothes ready.  We go to dinner with our dinner group tomorrow night.  I made plans for a fish fry.

GUN CONTROL?  Just The Facts, Ma'am

WISDOM  WISDOM  WISDOM  WISDOM  WISDOM  WISDOM  WISDOM  WISDOM

         YOUR PERSONAL GPS
You might reach your life's destination better if you remember
GALLUP NOTED THAT SELF-REPORTING OF GUN OWNERSHIP HAS REACHED AN 18 YEAR HIGH WITH NEARLY HALF OF ALL
AMERICAN HOUSEHOLDS REPORTING GUN OWNERSHIP

I HAVE A VERY STRICT GUN CONTROL POLICY:  IF THERE'S A GUN AROUND, I WANT TO BE IN CONTROL OF IT - Clint Eastwood

In 1939, Germany established gun control.  From 1939 to 1945, six million Jews and seven million others, unable to defend themselves, were exterminated.  No, this is not Germany.  Thanks to the wisdom of our founding fathers, Americans can defend themselves with firearms.  Like all of our other rights, we will have them only as long as we defend them.

I AM IN SUPPORT OF THE NRA POSITION ON GUN CONTROL - Bill Clinton

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN
WHAT DID OUR FOREFATHERS SAY?
They that give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety - Benjamin Franklin

To disarm the people is the most effectual way to enslave them - George Mason

No free man shall ever be debarred the use of firearms - Thomas Jefferson

I'M TIRED OF THE WHOLE ANTI-GUN THING.  SAYING THAT GUNS CAUSE MURDERS IS LIKE SAYING STEERING WHEELS CAUSE CAR WRECKS - Stanley Paskavich

I like Chicago.  It is known for the El, good steaks, expensive stores and beautiful architecture.  Unfortunately, the windy city also has a reputation for corrupt politics, violent crime and some of the strictest gun control laws in the country.  Even with it's strict gun control, it is truly Murder City!

IT ISN'T GUN CONTROL WE NEED, WE NEED SIN CONTROL - Si Robertson

Yes, if gun control equaled safety, then truly Chicago would be "Mayberry".  They have the strictest gun laws in the nation.  Too strict, actually.  Citizens have taken the city to court several times and the courts backed the citizens rights each time.

IT IS NOT A GUN CONTROL PROBLEM; IT'S A CULTURAL CONTROL PROBLEM - Bob Barr

JUST THE FACTS, MA'AM!
As Sgt. Joe Friday would point out, Thomas Jefferson said, "The Constitution assert that all power is inherent in the people, that they may exercise it by themselves, that it is their right and their duty to be at all times armed.

THE ANTI-GUN CROWD IS BANKRUPT OF EVIDENCE THAT GUN CONTROL REDUCES CRIME

Chicago's murder rate (18.5/100,000) is higher than New York (5.1/100,000) and Los Angeles (7.8/100,000) combined.  Higher than Fort Worth and Mobile, AL combined.  Or, higher than Tokyo, Berlin, London, Paris, and Moscow combined.  Chicago is the deadliest city in the world.  Obviously, gun control is not the answer.

THOMAS JEFFERSON WOULD BE PROUD TO KNOW THAT I AM DOING MY DUTY.  MY GUNS ARE LOCKED AND LOADED.

Recent violent gun shot deaths are truly sad.  After the fact, the problems were obvious but nothing was done to prevent the killings.  New laws are not the answer.  Enforcing the existing laws are the answer.  Instead of coming up with programs to stop the killings, President Obama is, as expected, coming out shouting for gun control.  Hilary Clinton just likened the GOP presidential candidates to terrorists.  Could a comparison of Obama's stand be likened to Adolph Hitler's?  It truly is up to "We the people" to protect our rights.

IF ALL PRINTERS WERE DETERMINED NOT TO PRINT ANYTHING TILL THEY WERE SURE IT WOULD OFFEND NOBODY, THERE WOULD BE VERY LITTLE PRINTED - Benjamin Franklin

CENSORSHIP IS THE CHILD OF FEAR AND THE FATHER OF IGNORANCE - Laurie Anderson

The 31st BANNED BOOK WEEK will be Sept. 27 to Oct. 3, 2015.  The American Library Assn. wants to celebrate our "Right to Read"

ONE CANNOT AND MUST NOT TRY TO ERASE THE PAST MERELY BECAUSE IT DOES NOT FIT THE PRESENT - Golda Meir

The first book I became aware of being banned was "Johnny Got His Gun".  The book was about a soldier in World War I and was published in 1939.  It was removed from the book shelves at the start of World War II and the Korean War.  The book is shocking, violent, brutal, remorseless and gruesome.  When I learned it had been banned I went right out and bought it.  IT WAS A VERY BORING BOOK!

Dalton Trumbo, the author, was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee as a suspected Communist sympathizer.  He refused to testify and was found in Contempt of Congress.  Like a lot of others in that day and time, he was black balled in Hollywood.

A SOCIETY THAT GETS RID OF IT'S TROUBLE MAKERS, GOES DOWN HILL - Robert Heinlein

ANNE FRANK'S "DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL"
Anne Frank's book was taken off the shelves and removed from reading lists.  Not because of the nightmare of hiding in an attic from the Nazi's.  No, it was because at one brief point, 14-year-old Anne describes her maturing anatomy.  Anne Frank died of pneumonia in a Nazi concentration camp.

THERE IS A WORSE CRIME THAN BURNING BOOKS, NOT READING BOOKS - Brodsky

Books thought to be dangerous, sexually explicit, irreverent or profane have been banned.  Yes, that included "To Kill A Mockingbird". Here is a list of books that also made people gasp, blush or shudder:  The Grapes of Wrath, The Color Purple,
The Harry Potter series, Animal Farm, A Farewell to Arms, and many others.

I DON'T THINK ANYTHING SHOULD BE BANNED.  IF YOU DON'T LIKE A BOOK, LAY IT ASIDE - Vikran Seth

Can you believe there are still calls for "Huck Finn" to be removed from libraries and class rooms?  Mark Twain wrote in a vernacular that included racial language that was common usage before, and after, the American Civil War.

My grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth (Hudson) Pierce, born before the Civil War, in old Virginia,  referred to blacks as "Niggers".  Grandma Pierce was a very proper lady.  She meant no disrespect to anyone.  That was the correct word in her day.  One must understand that great books, beginning with the Holy Bible have the power to both upset and inspire.

EVERY BOOK THAT IS BANNED IS A BADGE OF HONOR - Pamoedya Toer

BING CROSBY
Songs were banned also.  Would you believe Bing Crosby's famous WHITE CHRISTMAS?  It was war time and the song included the line "I'll be home for Christmas".  Some would not.
Others thought to be offensive: I get a kick out of you, Mambo Italiano by Rosemary Clooney, a favorite of mine, and John Denver's Rocky Mountain High

WITH HOLDING INFORMATION IS THE ESSENCE OF TYRANNY.  CONTROL OF THE FLOW OF INFORMATION IS THE TOOL OF DICTATORSHIPS - Bruce Covill

Look around the world or through history and you will see what happens to societies that ban ideas, images or beliefs.  They wind up as intolerant, oppressive and ugly.

On May 10, 1933, in Berlin, the Nazi party burned books by such authors as Freud, Einstein or Jack London.

THE ONLY VALID CENSORSHIP OF IDEAS IS THE RIGHT OF PEOPLE NOT TO LISTEN - Laurie Anderson

WHEN DEALING WITH DIFFICULT PEOPLE, REMEMBER YOU CAN'T CONTROL THEIR ACTIONS, ONLY YOUR OWN REACTIONS TO THEM

ANGER, IF NOT RESTRAINED, IS FREQUENTLY MORE HURTFUL TO US THAN THE INJURY THAT PROVOKED IT - Seneca

HOWARD DEAN
Howard Dean's campaign in the 2004 Iowa Caucus had amazing results, he was the poll leader.  Showing himself to be an out-of-control zealot, in a primal scream, shouted "We're going to Washington to take back the White House, YEEEEEAAARCH!  This brief gaffe was replayed 900 times on TV and he was out.

TRYING TO TAKE BACK HURTFUL WORDS SAID IN ANGER, IS LIKE TRYING TO RETRIEVE BULLETS AFTER YOU'VE FIRED THE GUN - Rashida Rowe

DONALD TRUMP
After the debate on Fox, Trump said on another network that Megan "had blood coming out of her eyes, and blood coming from her 'whatever'."

When Kelly returned from vacation Trump twittered, "He liked her show better when she was away".  He said she must of had a terrible vacation because she was "off her game".

TRUMP REFERRED TO KELLY AS A "BIMBO"

LEARN TO LOVE YOURSELF & NO ONES HURTFUL WORDS CAN HAVE POWER OVER YOU

MEGYN KELLY
Fox chief, Roger Ailes, said Trump owed Megyn Kelly an apology for his unprovoked attack.  Ailes went on to say that "Megyn Kelly represents the very best in American journalism", adding that "He could not be more proud of her professionalism and class in the face of Trump's verbal assaults".

SOMETIMES YOU NEED TO TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND FORGET THE HURTFUL THINGS.  HOLD YOUR HEAD HIGH AND PROVE YOU'RE BETTER THAN THE PEOPLE WHO HURT YOU - NISHAN PANWAR

HILARY CLINTON
Fifty-two percent of the voters are women.  Hilary Clinton has already reminded them that Trump has referred to women as "Fat Pigs, Dogs, Slobs and Disgusting Animals".  Clinton went on to comment on what Trump said about Kelly on another channel.  You can bet that Clinton will quote him on his BIMBO comment.

Only the people's anger at politicians has kept Trump alive so far.  But, like Howard Dean, he can go too far.

HE HAS WITH ME!

OUR LIVES ARE MUCH TOO SHORT TO JUST FOCUS ON THE HURTFUL TIMES, AND INSTEAD, WE SHOULD MAKE GREAT ATTEMPTS TO STAY ON THE PATH TOWARD GREATNESS - Anurag Prakash

IF MONEY IS YOUR HOPE FOR SECURITY, YOU WILL NEVER HAVE IT.  THE ONLY SECURITY A MAN WILL HAVE IN THIS WORLD IS A RESERVE OF KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, AND ABILITY - Henry Ford

YET ONE THING SECURES US WHATEVER BETIDE, THE SCRIPTURE ASSURE US THE LORD WILL PROVIDE - Sir Isaac Newton

Camp David, the country retreat for the President of the United States, is located 62 miles north northwest of Washington, DC, it is staffed by the U. S. Navy and the U. S. Marine Corps.  Several such camps were built,  one in North Carolina for the builders of Fontana Dam.  I stayed there in a hostel on the Appalachian Trail.

THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT OUR NATION'S SECURITY AND DEFEATING TERRORISM TRUMPT ALL OTHER PRIORITIES - Arlen Specter

MAIN LODGE, CAMP DAVID
Three fences surround the 180 acres of Camp David.  The camp has it's own golf green, driving range, movie theater, swimming pool and bowling alley.  The best perk for all the presidents is that no press is ever allowed.  It is guarded first by park rangers, then by the marines and, of course, by the Secret Service.

BEAUTY IS A RADIANCE THAT ORIGINATES FROM WITHIN AND COMES FROM INNER SECURITY AND STRONG CHARACTER - Jane Seymour

FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT
Camp David was first used as a presidential retreat when FDR's doctors said that the White House was too hot, that the president needed a cool-weather retreat.  Because the temperature in the higher elevation was always ten degrees cooler than DC, FDR found his "Shangri-La", as he named it.  FDR made twenty-two trips to his mountain kingdom, named after one of his favorite novels.  When asked where the planes came from that flew off the USS Hornet to bomb Tokyo in World War II, he said they came from "Shangri-La".

MAN MAINTAINS HIS BALANCE, POISE, AND SENSE OF SECURITY ONLY AS HE IS MOVING FORWARD - Maxwell Maltz

ASPEN LODGE
Camp David is even safer than the White House.  In addition to the protection of the three services and the large fenced in area, there are large, reinforced underground tunnels.  This is where President Bush was taken on the attacks of 9/11.  Every cabin in Camp David is named after a tree, Laurel, Hickory, Birch and Dogwood.  Elm is home to the Secret Service and the Presidential cabin is Aspen.

A HOUSE IS NOT A HOME UNLESS IT CONTAINS FOOD AND FIRE FOR THE MIND AS WELL AS THE BODY - Benjamin Franklin

REAGAN AND GEO. H. W. BUSH
Eisenhower loved the retreat and christened it after his grandson David.  Ronald Reagan made 187 trips to Camp David, George W. Bush actually spent a year of his two terms at Camp David.  Bill Clinton said because of his allergies he couldn't go to Camp David.  When he learned there would be no press, his allergies were cured.  Barrack Obama frequents the retreat also.
