There was a discussion on Fox News tonight about a charge that all Americans are not treated fairly.  Well, some are better off than others.  In the world market place where we have evolved, a skill and or education is necessary to get a high paying job.  In addition, to the minority drop outs, those who are promoted just to get rid of them, even though they do not meet any educational standards, are to blame.

Public education is in poor shape today because of social trends, mostly beginning in the 1960's, which destroyed classroom discipline, and a national consensus as to what children should learn.  By any reasonable measure, American school children are woefully unprepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

As more and more immigrates arrive in America bringing a pletora of languages, cultural traditions and religious beliefs, public education has taken on a new and political and social role.  In California recently the Mexican flag was flown over American schools. Such relationships have taken their toll on the teaching of skills and knowledge.

My wife and I ate dinner tonight at Bob Evans.  I decided I'd take a history poll among the college age servers.  I asked five people if they knew who JOHN PAUL JONES or DOUGLAS MACARTHUR was.  Two had heard of MacArthur, none had heard of John Paul Jones.  One claimed to be a history buff.  John Paul Jones, father of the American Navy probably did more to win the American Revolution against Britain than George Washington.  General MacArthur was Supreme Commander of the Pacific in World War II and Korea.

If our students today do not know of Patrick Henry's speech to our founding father's regarding our revolution against Britain, then they will not have an appreciation of their liberty.

"Is life so dear or peace so sweet as to be purchased by chains and slavery?  Forbid it, Almighty God.  I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death".

When asked if he wished to surrender  his sinking ship, John Paul Jones replied, "Surrender, hell, I have yet begun to fight".

One of the reasons I enjoy your blog so much is that you include history.
We have visited the St. John's Church in Richmond where Patrick Henry gave his "Give me liberty or give me death" speech. It was a moving experience just to be there and to know we were were standing in the same room as he did.
